How gophers can still win the Big Ten West division

BLOMINGTON, Indiana – The Gophers’ two defeats to Iowa and Indiana earlier this month made things much more difficult, but Minnesota still has a chance to win Big Ten West DIvision.

Minnesota’s path (5-3 in the Big Ten game) to participate in the Big Ten Championship must include the following factors:

– Next Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium, the US team is set to beat Wisconsin 15th (6-2) in the battle for the Paul Bunyan ax.

– Nebraska (1-7) should upset number 17 Iowa (6-2) on Friday in Lincoln, Nebraska.

– Purdue (5-3) beats Indiana (0-8) on Saturday in West Lafayette, Indiana.

“We have to take care of our business,” said Gophers coach P. J. Fleck. “If we lose next week, it doesn’t matter anyway. Something must happen outside of our control. We learn that when you control your own destiny, it develops better for you.

“When you need someone to do something, you never know,” Fleck continued. “But what we did was put ourselves in position. We need Iowa to fail, and then we need to find a way to get the Ax back. It is also an Ax. It’s a competitive game, it’s a week of rivalry. … We must play our best football. I know the kids are very excited about the opportunity. ”

Tanner Morgan became the U-winning quarterback of all time on Saturday, beating Mitch Leidner. Morgan is now 25-12 years old as a starter.

“It’s pretty cool,” Morgan said. “I treasure it a lot, realizing that there have been many quarterbacks in the past who have done a lot of special things here. This is something that I do not take lightly. This is truly a team effort. ”

Gophers quarterback Conner Olson broke the Big Ten’s record for most starts against Indiana on Saturday. Olson made his 56th start, breaking a draw with Ohio State lineman Billy Price (2014-17).

After three field goals in three matches against Iowa in the red zone, the Gophers lost Saturday in their first race with 20 Indiana players.

Minnesota then scored touchdowns on the next five drives in the red zone.

Fleck wanted to discuss the first trip. “We were definitely going to go for it,” Fleck said.

The Gophers did not draw for prizes in the second game in a row and won in the number of assists plus two with interceptions from defenders Philip Howard and Tyler Nubin. … Corner-back Terrell Smith did not play. … Niles Pinckney recorded a single U bag while Indiana did not. … Kai Thomas has thrown 26 times for 105 yards and two TDs. Mar’Kez Irving added 14 carries for 70 yards and a TD.
