The release of Meng Wangzhou, CFO of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, to China was used by CCP media to run anti-US campaigns and promote Meng as a “national hero” against the US in Chinese schools and kindergartens.
After reaching a suspended prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Meng returned to China on Sept. 2 on a chartered flight.
On December 1, 2018, at the request of the American Justice Department, Menke was arrested by Canadian police at Vancouver International Airport. U.S. prosecutors have charged Meng with bank fraud and embezzlement. The Justice Department requested that he be extradited to the United States to face trial.
For almost three years, Meng has spent time with family at his Vancouver home.
After Meng arrived in Shenzhen, China, on the evening of September 25, the CCP’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection website published an article very early the next morning saying that the United States was trying to obstruct or even hinder China’s development process.
CCP spokesman The People’s Daily ran a statement at the same time, calling the U.S. political witch hunt to target the Chinese people and suppress Chinese technology company Huawei an incident in Meng. Other articles in CCP’s official media make the same argument.
Regim outlet Guangming Daily went one step further. Its WeChat account “Educator” posted an article titled “Today, tell students the story of Meng Wanzhou’s return home” and suggested that Meng use the incident as a blueprint for students’ homework.
An assignment for Class 8, Grade 5 of Experimental Primary School No. 2 in Zhaoping City, Shandong Province, was advertised online from 26 September. The title of the assignment was “From the Thoughts of the Meng Wangzhou Incident.” The following six questions were listed: “Who was Meng Wenzhou? Who was detaining him? Why was he detained? How was he rescued? What does the Meng Wangzhou incident tell us? As an elementary school student, what are your hopes for the future?”
The Epoch Times on September 29 called Experimental Primary School No. 2 in Zhaoping for comment, but the calls were not answered.
The owner of a supermarket in Zhaoping, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Epoch Times that the Meng case was used to brainwash students at school and that he was “sorry for the children who know nothing at such a young age.” He said the Chinese people who are following the uproar are “really sick”.
He said Meng had squandered the hard-earned money of the Chinese people abroad and lived in a luxurious house in Canada, yet the Chinese were rejoicing for him.
On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, a user named “Chichi Kat” confirmed on September 27 that his daughter’s school was teaching about the Meng incident. Another user, “Lee just walks away,” said schools were organizing students to watch videos of Meng returning home. The user saw a sign about Meng Wanzhou as he passed the “Little Grapefruit of the World” school radio station.
One user posted “A paragraph from the Meng Wangzhou class meeting given by the school.” Another post states that the Meng incident was discussed in the ideological and moral farming class of third grade students. It was compared to the resistance war against Japan and Syria, which “became a successful patriotic education lesson.”
Henan University, which has exchanges and collaborations with Huawei, republished Seng’s September 2 article on Meng by CCP’s state news agency Xinhua before September 2. There was “repression and blockade by many countries” and “national integrity”
Lee Yaming, a media professional in Japan, told The Epoch Times how the CCP used the Meng incident for elementary school students in its patriotic brainwashing education.
Lee said that when Meng was under surveillance in Canada, the CCP portrayed him in a very positive light. The Chinese internet was overwhelmed by the propaganda describing him as an anti-American hero. No role model has been set, he said, adding that the CCP is using the incident to create what Meng wants to be.
“It simply came to our notice then. It always has to set something up to promote its value theory and let people hear it, “Lee said.” In some places, he is even discussed in class to brainwash teenagers. “
In Lee’s view, the CCP may have two objectives in making Meng an anti-American hero. One is that now that no one believes in CCP, this is the right time to arouse the common man. Another is that people are dissatisfied with the authorities due to the overall recession in various industries. By doing this, it can stimulate people’s patriotic zeal and divert their attention, Lee said.
