Hungary is a sovereign country that will not listen to the instructions of the United States regarding the ratification of Sweden as a NATO member, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The previous day, the US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, warned that his country’s patience has a limit and that Washington hopes that Budapest will approve Sweden’s membership in the Atlantic Alliance as soon as possible.
There is no need for such statements; they show a lack of respect for Hungary. We do not criticize the decisions of the United States; we do not criticize the decisions of its Congress; we do not interfere with what they put on the agenda or what they do not include in it; and we expect the same from others,” emphasized the senior. Hungarian diplomat.
Szijjarto emphasized that Hungary is not ready to act according to instructions that come from anywhere in the world because it is not “the 51st state, but a sovereign country.”
On February 5, the Hungarian Parliament was unable to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO due to a lack of quorum after the ruling parties, with two-thirds of the votes, boycotted a rare session.
In particular, representatives from the alliance of Hungary’s ruling parties, Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People’s Party, were absent.
The meeting was called on the initiative of the opposition parties, and the event was attended by the US ambassador in Budapest, David Pressman, and many ambassadors from other Western countries.
In May 2022, the events in Ukraine encouraged Finland and Sweden to respond to requests for membership in the bloc from the NATO Secretary General. Admission must receive the approval of all member countries.
Turkey and Hungary were the only ones to oppose the accession of the two Nordic countries.
However, in the case of Finland, the differences were resolved, and the country became the 31st member of the Atlantic Alliance on April 4, 2023.
As for Sweden, its application has already received approval from Ankara, but that from Budapest is still pending. (Sputnik)
