HYBE and MBC reconciled after four years of conflict

After four years of continuous conflict, HYBE and MBC have resolved their differences.

On October 30, HYBE president Bang Si Hyuk visited MBC for an open and frank discussion with MBC president Ahn Hyeong Joon, extending an invitation to him as a gesture of repentance. During this meeting, Ahn Hyeong Joon expressed regret for MBC’s past mistakes and outdated practices that caused harm to HYBE artists.

Ahn Hyeong Joon shared, “We strongly agree that there is a need to establish a relationship between artists and broadcasting companies that is commensurate with the respectable status of K-pop. In addition, we also agreed to improve the long-standing flawed production culture of broadcasting and entertainment companies and create an environment for content creation with mutual respect and consideration. ” He also announced that MBC will take the lead in fostering an environment that supports the rights of artists and builds a fair partnership where mutual growth is possible.

Bang Si Hyuk also commented, “I want to express my deep gratitude to MBC for their sincere apology and commitment to improving the rights of K-pop artists. I hope that this meeting will serve as the starting point for a new era in which a healthy content production environment is established throughout the country’s entertainment industry, which will go beyond the borders of our two company.

Furthermore, during the meeting, Bang Si Hyuk emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing artists’ rights for the sustainable growth of K-pop. He points to specific areas that need improvement, such as the practice where the performers have to wait for a long time to greet the production team even after the performance. HYBE further revealed that the two parties intend to engage in further discussions to build a healthy content production environment and aim to produce visible results soon.

The conflict between HYBE and MBC has been going on for the past four years. It was learned that it started in 2019 when BTS performed at a major New Year’s Eve music show in the United States, preventing their participation in MBC’s annual New Year’s Eve event, “MBC Music Festival,” in same day. Because of this, all the artists associated with HYBE have not appeared on MBC’s “Music Core” since then.
