Hyde10: Ten ideas similar to that of Dolphins’ worker, 24-17 win over Jets

The Miami Dolphins did what was required on Sunday. They beat the Jets, 24-17, to carry their winning streak to three games and bought some hope for a strong finish.

Here are 10 thoughts on the game:

1. Player of the Game: Tua Tagovailoa. He asked did everything. He completed 27 of 33 passes for 273 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was not great. He was not told to be more than good skillfully. And he came on the road. In a way, the dolphins lose to the underdog if Tua makes mistakes. He stepped into a throw for a 65-yard touchdown and hit a wide open Mack Hollins after coverage was blown away by Jets rookie Isaiah Dunn. Ok, it was narrowed down a bit if you want style points. But Tua later hung up against a crowd and made a fine throw and what proved to be the winning touchdown, 5 yards to Miles Gaskins in the middle. True, it was the Jets, who have the worst-scoring defense in the league (32.9 points allowed in Sunday’s entering games). And Tua threw a bad pass for an interception to set up the Jets’ first outreach. But, for the most part, he did what he was told to do and he did it well.

2. Did the offending line show some signs of life?, Perhaps? just a pulse? Tua was not dismissed all day against the 18th-ranked defense. The running game also showed effectiveness, with 32 carries for 116 yards (23 or 89 yards at Gaskins). The game began when the Dolphins took the ball on the Jets 49 with 8:50 and milked 6:50 off the clock. Gaskins took part in two, third-down Wildcat plays for the first down. Tua completes a third-down pass for second. The drive ended with a game-ceiling field goal that made it 24–14 with 1:57 to play.

3. Started by Joe Flaco, a very seasoned veteran of 37 years In good part for the Jets because the Dolphins lead the league in blitzing. It was a white flag against the Jets without rookie Zach Wilson rolling the dice. Even Flacco was susceptible to surprises. In the second quarter the Dolphins made a foul from the 6-yard line and on goal when safety Brandon Jones blinded him. Christian Wilkins recovered, then Jevon Holland retrieved Wilkins’ rumble. But you saw there’s one thing Flacco could do. Facing an attack, he threw to Elijah Moore, who defeated Byron Jones for a 63-yard touchdown. This is about as much as one might be expected to make the flagging Jets offense—especially since one of his regular threats, trailing Michael Carter, was nine for 63 yards with a knee injury in the middle of the game. After the carry went out.

4. If the dolphins are going to win Defense and field goals – ala Tony Sparano’s Dolphins – will then have to get Jason Sanders back in form. He scored 36 field goals out of 39 last year. He has made 13 of 18 this year after missing 32 yards just before the half and making 24-yards near the end. Then again, maybe it was The Meadowlands? Jets kicker Matt Amendola missed a kick of 55 and 40 yards.

5. I’d rather tame with the ball The Dolphins’ regular use of the Wildcats in short-yardage and goal-line situations against the league’s worst-scoring defense. The use of wildcats suggests a few things: 1) they do not rely on conventional offense; 2) Tua is not going to run the ball at all – and he is not reliable in the red zone; 3) The pass has the strange issue of security. That said, after two Wildcat plays were short in the fourth quarter, Tua hung in a crumbling pocket to find Gaskins for a 5-yard TD to make it, 21-14. He was 8-for-8 for 68 yards on the drive.

6. The Dolphins’ First Campaign of the Game: 83 yards for a touchdown. Rest of first half: 80 yards total, no points. Why was that first dolphin drive so creative and effective? Did the 10 days to prepare had anything to do with it? Tua completed all six passes of 61 yards. Mike Gesicki, who did not have a catch last week, caught the first two passes, one where he was held open for a 26-yard advantage. Gaskins’ first two runs went for a combined 17 yards. The drive ended in a Wildcat formation with the Gaskins handing out an in-motion Jaylen Waddle, who cornered the two Jets for a 3-yard touchdown. That 11-play, 83-yard drive was exactly the kind of short pass that…

7. … defined dolphin offense throughout the year Exposed as just before halfway through. The Jets missed a field goal before half to hand the Dolphins the ball with 1:06 on their 45-yard line. Tua threw short completions in succession of 7, 7, 6, 9, 1 and 8 yards – in the hope that one of those short passes could open for a big advantage. He used all three time-outs. But he didn’t take any shots in the deep – nothing perpendicular to the end zone. Then Sanders’ 32-yard field goal effort hit against Honest for a miss.

8. Quick Hits:

* The Jets wasted two time-outs in the middle of the third quarter, after the first fall. Identifying the team that scored the worst runs.

* Indianapolis beat Buffalo – at Buffalo. AFC East looks like it just has to take on the Patriots.

* San Francisco beat Jacksonville 5-5. Since the Dolphins own next year’s San Francisco first-round pick that counts.

9. Jaylen Waddle caught eight passes for 65 yards To continue an exceptional rookie season. He is the most productive receiver on the team – and looks like it won’t be close given the regular injured list. Preston Williams had a goal behind the end zone on Sunday, almost taking a brilliant catch – and it looked like he had hurt his shoulder.

10. Carolina at Dolphins, The Dolphins had their one road game in 57 days in New York on Sunday. Carolina went 5-5 against Washington in Sunday’s game with a margin of plus-12 points. It’s been a trying year for Matt Roulette as he tries to find a quarterback. Teddy Bridgewater last year. Sam Darnold fought this year until he was injured. Now Cam Newton is the fill-in.
