Carlos Tomas Aranda Burgoin, who is missing in Canada Since July 7, he has been calling for the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, to discuss the case “in person” before the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, in the phone call that both leaders will have on Sunday, August 20.
The family complained that despite repeated verbal and written requests from the father, Octavio Aranda, Canadian authorities have not reported any leads that could lead to the young man’s whereabouts after he was missing for more than 42 days in Osyoo’s town.
Joshua Aranda, Carlos’ brother, told Reforma that Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena informed him and his father of the call on August 7 at a meeting to follow up on the case.
Carlos Aranda immigrated to Canada from Oaxaca on June 9 with the intention of gaining more knowledge in his tourism education, his father said.
He worked alongside other Mexican colleagues on a farm in Osoyoos, but after an argument with them on Thursday night, July 6, the young man ran away from there and, according to his father, was never seen again by one of his colleagues.
CCTV footage released by Canadian police to the father shows Carlos at the reception desk of a hotel, where he went to ask for help, visibly frightened. After an officer helped him, the young man ran away again and told the police.
The father traveled to Canada to personally search for his son, days after learning of his son’s disappearance, as local authorities showed no response.
He was able to finance his stay on his own and with the help of family and friends who organized raffles and donations, but he had to return to Mexico because he ran out of money.
Therefore, the family also asked the authorities of both countries to support him with these expenses so that he could return to Canada and further the investigation.
On August 8, AMLO pledged in its morning conference that it would attempt to raise Aranda’s case with Trudeau in a pending phone call.
In addition, he indicated that the Canadian Prime Minister intended to speak to him to thank him for supporting Mexico in the wildfires ravaging Canada.
