‘True Detective’ creator Nic Pizzolatto is working on producing and writing a television series called ‘The Magnificent Seven’ which is in development at Amazon Studios. The series is among the first twelve MGM/United Artists motion picture titles that Amazon Studios has identified for development, following its acquisition of the Hollywood film studio.
Initially, Pizzolatto wanted to make an original Western for Amazon Studios with a significant commitment. The series will follow a former outlaw on an epic journey, forming a gang and facing a threat from his past, encountering dangers along the way. This idea was later turned into a reboot of ‘Magnificent Seven’, as Amazon Studios wanted to base it on a well-known intellectual property.
The serial reboot of “The Magnificent Seven” is being described as a great epic in the tradition of Golden Age westerns. An outlaw and his companions must unite a motley crew of memorable fighters to defend a settlement of immigrant farmers in a war against cattle ranchers in central Texas in a saga of adventure, action and romance.
The 1960 United Artists film “The Magnificent Seven” starring Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” and had three sequels, the 2016 remake and a television series that aired from 1998 to 2000 .
Mark Johnson, who was previously attached to executive produce Pizzolatto’s western, remains executive producer on “The Magnificent Seven,” alongside Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman.
This project is not Pizzolatto’s first work in the world of film and television, as he was recognized for his work in the ‘True Detective’ series. In addition, he was the writer of other television series, such as ‘The Killing’ and ‘Deadwood’.
Amazon Studios continues to invest in the production of original content, and this series is part of its strategy to expand its offering and position itself as the reference platform in the world of entertainment. The acquisition of MGM/United Artists will allow Amazon Studios to have a larger library of content and establish a privileged position in the market.
