A man was freed after more than 30 years in prison for crime he didn’t commit

A former pastor of a congregation, Zuncheddu, was intentionally accused of a triple homicide that occurred in 1991, a case manipulated by a corrupt policeman who took his life at the age of 27.

The horrific multiple homicide took place on January 8, 1991. At that time, they killed Gesuino Fadda, 56 years old; his son Giuseppe, 24, and a 55-year-old employee identified as Ignazio Pusceddu, after some cattle disputes in the mountainous province of Cagliari, Italy.

Luigi PinnaFadda’s son-in-law, the only survivor of the “Sinnai Massacre,” has been the only witness in this case for many years. However, everything changed on November 25, 2023, when the attorney general, Francesco Piantoni, questioned the credibility of the only witness.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered declaration failures which Luigi confessed in the trial.

“33 years ago, before the suspects were identified, the police officer leading the investigation showed me Zuncheddu’s photo and told me that he was the one who caused the massacre. Like that, I made the mistake of listening to the wrong person,” said Luigi Pinna.

Unfortunately, Zuncheddu was 27 years old when he was arrested, so he spent almost 33 years in prison, thus dealing with “the greatest judicial error in the history of the republic” in Italy.

Despite the situation, Beniamino Zuncheddu never felt angry towards the judges because they made a mistake; however, he stated that he felt robbed because he spent more than half of his life in prison.

“I want to have a family, build something, and be a free citizen like everyone else. 30 years ago, I was young; now I am old. Everything was stolen from me. Now I will rest, most menos mental,” he said in a press conference.
