IMSS will begin a study to eliminate coronary artery disease

Genetic research and risk factors of 20,000 young people over 10 years to carry out strategic interventions that prevent cardiovascular conditions, is part of the new research of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) to raise the quality of interventions. to the beneficiaries.

This population is not identified in Clinical Practices as a population that requires specific management, and in which studies and interventions should be performed before the development of the pathology becomes disabling and fatal.

“The hypothesis is that if we treat at an early age, we will avoid morbidity and mortality from ischemic heart disease in later ages,” explained Jorge Escobedo de la Peña, head of the Research Unit in Clinical Epidemiology.

The clinic, located in the Regional General Hospital (HGR) 1 Doctor Carlos Mac Gregor Sánchez Navarro, was created in 2000 and since then has helped to identify the risk factors in the beneficiary population and the influence of the reduction of ischemic heart disease, such as. as well as factors that affect the complication of diabetes and covid-19 and cerebrovascular diseases among others.

“These studies have allowed the Institute to control and promote its preventive measures. Knowing the prevalence of diabetes, obesity and hypertension allows PrevenIMSS activities to be implemented in the organization to be more targeted in specific countries. “The main work is designed to look at the main issues of the health entitlement of the Institute, while obtaining participation. to approach the best management of patients,” added Escobedo de la Peña.

Five time researchers from the same Research Unit collaborate in the study to eliminate Coronary Artery Disease (ECAD), four traveling researchers within HGR 1, as well as researchers from the High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) of Siglo XXI and La Raza National. Medical Centers (CMN), and hospitals in Mexico City, Querétaro, State of Mexico and Veracruz, which are in Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Nutrition, Information Technology, Rheumatology, Internal Medicine and Genetics, among others.

Initially, the researchers focused on the study of the disease burden in the population enrolled in social security through the indicator of healthy life years lost adjusted for disability, which studied the time that people live with an illness or suffer premature death. problems with Mexican life expectancy.

“In the first studies it was found that the two main causes of transport diseases in Mexico were ischemic heart disease, since because of this condition the rate of lost health has increased three times in the first decade of this century; and the second cause is diabetes, which in people aged 25 to 44 is significantly associated with pain of some kind of failure,” he explained.

IMSS conducts population studies of key cardiovascular risk factors

After this analysis, Escobedo de la Peña demonstrated the unity in the studies of both conditions through population studies to investigate the main cardiovascular risk factors, therefore he participated in the study Multiple Assessment of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in America (CARMELA, for his .

“In Mexico City alone, we studied over 1,700 subjects and found the first in diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome (a group of conditions that together increase the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, strokes and other health problems). serious health), with prevalence compared to other Latin American states compared,” he explained.

He indicated that with these results a study was carried out with 20,000 beneficiaries and it was discovered that among the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, the prevalence of diabetes was 13 percent, 29 percent with hypertension, 13 percent with high cholesterol; 31 percent smoke in men and 10 percent in women; Obesity is 18 percent in men and 27 percent in women, and 14 percent central abdominal obesity in men and 49 percent in women.
