The process for election 2024 Just getting started and the signatures of the dead are back: the National Electoral Institute (INE) noted that at least two independent candidates for the presidency used the signatures of the deceased to gain space in the race.
To win the presidential candidacy through independent means, candidates have until January 6, 2024, to collect a minimum of 961,405 signatures, equivalent to 1 percent of the electoral roll.
Time is running out to collect the necessary signatures to participate in the 2024 presidential election, and only two of the nine independent candidates obtained only 3 percent, however, in their small percentage the signatures show that there are conflicts, according to data from the latest report. on INE with a cut-off date of October 16.
About this producer Eduardo Verástegui and the former governor of Oaxaca, Ulises Ruiz, with “additional” support from citizens. The first has a total of 37,643 signatures, while the second has already presented the INE for a total of 35,614 titles.
However, the INE noted in its lists the signatures of people removed from the electoral roll, which may be due to death or belong to those who have lost their electoral rights due to judicial processes, that is, the people who are in prison.
In the list of Verastegui There are 26 rubrics of this type, and Ulises Ruiz has a total of 59. But that’s not all, because according to data from the Electoral Institute, these two candidates have other inconsistencies in their support among citizens and they are as follows:
Of the 37,643 signatures of Eduardo Verastegui30,530 have been checked by the INE Control Board, and some show these irregularities:
- 407 signatures are duplicates.
- 12 were missing data.
- 2,967 presents another contradiction.
- 636 were processed.
- 2,968 were checked in the control table.
Of the 35,614 signatures of Ulises Ortiz, 18,102 have already been approved by the Control Board, and another 17,512 have shown disagreement:
- 1,138 are duplicate signatures.
- 27 data not found.
- 14,391 showed irregularities.
- 76 are in processing
- 1,709 are in the Control Table
This is how other independent candidates go, according to INE
The list of independent candidates who have given the most support to INE is as follows:
- Eduardo Verástegui with 37,643 signatures.
- Ulises Ruiz with 35,614 signatures.
- MarÃa Ofelia Edgar Mares with 113 signatures.
- Ignacio Benavente Torres with 105 signatures

- RocÃo Gabriela González Castañeda with 32 signatures.
- Fernando Mauricio Jiménez Chávez with 22 signatures.
- Hugo Eric Flores Cervantes with 8 signatures.
- Manuel Antonio Romo Aguirre with 6 companies.
Despite the small number of signatures, only two of the nine independent candidates did not register inconsistencies in their submitted signatures, and they are Hugo Eric Flores Cervantes, founder of the Social Encounter Party (PES), and Manuel Antonio Romo Aguirre.
This is not the first time they have used signatures of the dead in the election process
In approving the consultation on the Revocation of the Mandate, the Complaints and Complaints Commission of INE identified a total of 17,766 signatures of the dead, of which 14,957 were presented by the organization Let Democracy Follow, linked to the Morenista Gabriela Jiménez. This case was revealed on Radio Formula in December 2021.
Because of the above, the INE imposed a penalty of 500 thousand pesos on that organization. In that case, a signature is only valid if it has the photos of the voter card on both sides, as well as the holder’s face.
However, the activists involved in Morena recorded photos of stray dogs and even objects such as chairs, pens, or pencils, and people whose identity is not visible in the image, so it cannot be verified if THE CREDENTIALS corresponds to the person who “gives” his signature.
