GOOD LUCK, India. On Saturday, Indian police said they had indicted local Amazon.com executives under drug laws for allegedly smuggling marijuana through an online store.
On November 14, police in central Madhya Pradesh arrested two men carrying 20 kg (44 lb) of marijuana and found they were using Amazon India’s website to order and smuggle the substance under the guise of stevia leaves, a natural sweetener. to other Indian states.
The state police said in a statement that the executive directors of Amazon India were named as defendants under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act due to differences in responses in documents provided by the company in response to police questions and facts found during the discussion.
Police did not disclose how many executives were charged.
Police, who previously called and spoke with Amazon executives about the case, estimated that around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb) of marijuana were sold through Amazon, valued at approximately $ 148,000.
Amazon said in a statement that it does not authorize the listing and sale of illegal products, adding that it takes strict action against sellers in the event of any violation.
“We have been informed of the problem and are currently investigating it,” Amazon said of the alleged marijuana smuggling.
The Indian authorities have stepped up their efforts in the fight against illegal drugs in recent years. Many famous Indian actors and TV presenters have been under the scrutiny of the anti-drug authorities since last year.
