GREENWOOD, Ind. ( Associated Press) – Three people were killed and two injured, including a 12-year-old girl, after a rifle opened fire at a food court in an Indiana shopping mall Sunday night. A civilian was shot dead, police said.
Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Iason said at a news conference that the man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines and opened fire at patrons.
The name of the attacker has not been disclosed.
Irson said a 22-year-old man from neighboring Bartholomew County, who had permission to carry a firearm, shot the attacker.
Isan said four of the five people shot were women. He said a 12-year-old girl was one of the two injured, both of whom are in a stable condition.
Isan said the police recovered a suspicious bag in a bathroom near the area.
Police officials responded to the news of firing at the mall around 6 pm.
“The real hero of the day is the civilian who was legally carrying a firearm to that food court and was able to stop the shooter as soon as it started,” Ison said.
This is the latest shoot to rock the country in 2022. Schools, churches, grocery stores and Fourth of July parades in Highland Park, Illinois, have become the scene of such incidents in recent months. However, the reality of the country’s staggering murder rate can be seen most clearly in the individual murders that rarely make the news.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and several other agencies are assisting with the investigation.
“We are sick that there has been another incident of this type in our country,” said Indianapolis Police Deputy Chief Chris Bailey.
There was no threat now in the area on Sunday night, officials said.
Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with approximately 60,000 residents. Mayor Mark Myers called for “prayers for the victims and our first responders”.
“This tragedy strikes at the heart of our community,” Myers said in a statement.
Officials will release more details at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time on Monday.
