Infante assures that the air quality in La Rioja is devastating and presents an analysis for better particles

The ‘La Cigüeña’ station includes a new automatic suspended particle system acquired for 32,912 euros.

The general director of Environmental Quality, Climate Change, and Water, José María Infante, assured that the air quality in La Rioja is “disturbing.” Regarding the last year analyzed, 2022, most of the time the quality is between “good and very good” and “less than one percent that it is unfavorable, possibly due to sub-Saharan particles or entry, like a haze.”

José María Infante made these statements at the ‘La Cigüeña’ air quality station, located near the University of La Rioja, where he went to present a new automatic suspended particle analyzer obtained from the company Envira Sostenible.SA for 32,912 euros.

The Government of La Rioja, through the General Directorate of Environmental Quality, Climate Change, and Water, acquired this new automatic analyzer of suspended particles of size less than 2.5 microns from the company Envira Sostenible SA

“We got a new continuous PM2.5 analyzer, which is the best particle that the directive told us we should measure,” explained the general director.

Infante showed the new acquisition to the Environment Councilor of Logroño City Council, Jesús López. As explained, the La Rioja Air Quality Network has continuously measured the best particles in the urban agglomeration of Logroño since the end of 2023.

Until the acquisition of this new analyzer, PM2.5 was measured at the ‘La Cigüeña’ station using the gravimetric reference method with a sampling frequency of every three days, “but continuous measurement was not available.”

In La Rioja, air quality monitoring is carried out through the continuous measurement of the main atmospheric pollutants in five stations located in Logroño (urban agglomeration of Logroño and Lardero), Alfaro, Arrúbal, Galilea, and Pradejón (rural area).

The origin of the analyzed particles is mainly human activity (road traffic, industrial combustion processes, heating of buildings, burning of agricultural residues, etc.). The particles can be inhaled and penetrate the respiratory system, which can aggravate pathologies that can lead to premature death, especially in the case of PM2.5, hence the great importance of its measurement and control.

According to the National Air Quality Index, in 2022, the situation in La Rioja will be good (84.5% of the time) or reasonably good (15.5% of the time) in urban areas. For its part, in rural areas, the situation is good (85.4% of the time) or reasonably good (14.7% of the time).

The pollutant concentration data obtained at the five stations in Rioja are sent in real-time to the air quality management center located in the General Directorate of Environmental Quality, Climate Change and Water, where it is analyzed and validated, in their case.

The validated data is sent to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which in turn transfers it to the European Commission so that it can be used by citizens and other interested organizations.
