Israel admits to flooding Hamas tunnels in Gaza to render them unusable

The Israeli Army admitted on Tuesday that there are flooded tunnels of the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip to destroy because the militants are hiding there, as well as bases for the management of attacks and weapons. To accomplish this task, the troops threw “large volumes of water” into the underground construction.

The flooding “is part of the tools deployed to neutralize the threat to Hamas’ underground tunnel network,” the Army said in a statement, acknowledging for the first time a practice that has been heavily rumored. It is said that water pumping “is only done in routes and locations that are appropriate,” the document added.

The Israeli forces claimed that they studied the location of the wells and the underground characteristics in order not to harm the groundwater flow with this pumping. The families of the 136 hostages still held in Gaza showed fear from the beginning about this practice, now confirmed, because it could also endanger the hostages, who are suspected to be held in those buildings.

It is estimated that Hamas has created a network of more than 480 kilometers of tunnels throughout the Palestinian enclave, and only a small part of it has been destroyed in the nearly four months of the Israeli offensive. On Monday, in a tunnel more than a kilometer long, Israeli forces said they found a military base where a Hamas commando in Khan Younis, south of the Strip, monitored attacks.

The network of tunnels was initially used to circumvent the blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip after Hamas came to power in 2007, allowing the movement of people, goods, and weapons between the enclave and Egypt. After the 2014 military conflict between Israel and Hamas, the network expanded, and the Islamist movement began using it to fire rockets against Israel.
