Israel must not let the undemocratic practices of its regional allies stay with it

Meet Jared Kushner and Steve Mnuchin – two American politicians who owe much of their impressive wealth to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Kushner, a former senior adviser to President Donald Trump, founded global investment firm Affinity Partners; And Mnuchin, a former US Secretary of the Treasury, undertook a similar venture with his private equity firm Liberty Strategic Capital.

In total, Kushner’s income from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is $2 billion, while Mnuchin earned $1 billion at the time.

According to the New York TimesPIF’s board – made up of shrewd Saudi and Western economists – recommended investing in Kushner’s company.

Objections include, “inexperience of affinity fund management”; likely the state would be responsible for “the bulk of the investment and risk”; Due diligence on the operations of the fledgling firm which they found “unsatisfactory in all aspects”; a proposed asset management fee that “seems to be excessive”; and “public relations risks” from Kushner’s former role as senior adviser to his father-in-law, the former US president.

Meanwhile, former Wall St. Superstar Mankuchin got the green signal from the board.

The PIF is led by the Saudi Crown Prince and de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman, widely known by his abbreviation MBS. He managed to persuade the board to give Kushner the $2 billion he had asked for within a few days.

You don’t need to be a financial expert to figure out the underlying logic here: this is how the rulers of the Middle East thank foreigners who helped them in the past; This is how they invest in the leaders of the future. If Trump and Kushner ever take over the White House again, they will remember who stood by them.

The crown prince’s coin boom is related to Kushner’s political prospects, not his financial prospects. The political possibilities in the United States are worth billions. This is what Prince understands but investment sharks do not.

Both beneficiaries are not only proud Jews, they are also openly and enthusiastically supportive of Israel and their relationship with the Saudi prince could potentially prompt a normalization process between the kingdom and the Jewish state.

While Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid avoid openly discussing the issue, they are both well aware of its seriousness. They are convinced that if Saudi Arabia decides to follow in the footsteps of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain and openly sign a deal with Israel, the Middle East will see a tectonic shift that will forever change Israel’s position in the region. will change for

Now half empty for the glass. Saudi Arabia is an autocratic and corrupt country. Its leader is reckless, unstable and dangerous, and his behavior is palm-grabbing.

An American who once met MBS told me that he asked him why he allows himself to spray nearly hundreds of millions of dollars on pieces of art that don’t speak to him and dock useless boats. go. The Saudi prince retorted, “Because I can.”

Israel has every reason to work with MBS, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and other regional rulers.

Creating a unified Israeli-Sunni front against Iran is vital to Israel’s security, and perhaps even to its survival, but lest we forget for a moment the true nature of these regimes. What works for Jared Kushner doesn’t necessarily work for the State of Israel.

We should work with them, but we cannot adopt their norms.

The best example of this dilemma is Israel’s relationship with Qatar. On the one hand, Qatari money helps Israel de-escalate tensions in the Gaza Strip and keep terrorism at bay.

On the other hand, the Gulf Kingdom provides immense help to terrorist groups in the Palestinian territory especially through its state-owned Al Jazeera media house.

Everyone has a finger in this pie, even the Iranians. Israeli businessmen, including retired senior IDF officials, are heavily involved in Qatar’s vague dealings. One can understand why Qataris are interested in them but what does this say about our norms?

Those of us who are a little taller still remember the fruitful relationship between Israel and the Iranian Shah. Some uniformed messengers were sent by the state to Tehran to bring back the multimillionaire.

Relations with Christian factions in Lebanon during the First Lebanon War also had a heroic and romantic image that was hardly rooted in reality. The leaders of these factions only used Israelis.

An IDF commander told me then: “You need a million dollars to bribe a Thai general, but a plate of hummus at Jounih will do the trick for Israel.”

Since its inception, Zionism has longed for blending in the Middle East not through constant wars and oppression, but through hard work, culture, and even peace, if possible.

There is still a heartbeat in this most important desire, but we won’t be able to get there.
