Following the election victory of teacher Delfina Gómez (Morena) in the State of Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the State of Mexico would join the federal plan for health through the IMSS-Bienestar program. In López Obrador’s own words:
“Now that the State of Mexico has been successful, the day we saw Teacher Delfina, we talked about this issue and she completely agrees that the entire State of Mexico is served by the IMSS-welfare system.”
In this context, the Social Security Institute of the State of Mexico and the Municipalities (ISSEMYM), which provides care to state employees and public servants, will have to join this federal health care plan.
López Obrador also pointed out that Mexico City is in the process of joining the IMSS-welfare system.
He stressed the importance of addressing the structural problems inherited from previous governments in order to achieve a quality health system.
President López Obrador assured that hard work is being done to deal with the shortage of medicines. He informed that in the 15 states that are already part of the IMSS-Bienestar programme, supply levels close to 100% have been achieved. However, he acknowledged that states are still pending to join the system and stressed that the process is on.
