Seven bodies were found by the Italian Coast Guard in the waters near the island of Malta, on a day when local authorities confirmed that more than 2,700 migrants had reached the southern Italian coast in the last 24 hours. So far this year, more than 20,000 immigrants have landed on the Italian coast, more than triple the 6,500 in the same period in 2022, according to official data.
