‘It’s Worth the Weight’: Producer Jerry Bruckheimer on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Jerry Bruckheimer is the prolific producer behind several blockbuster action movies and has another big hit on his hands. After 36 years, the long-awaited ‘Top Gun’ sequel has finally hit the theaters.

The film has received rave reviews from fans and a standing ovation of six minutes at the Cannes Film Festival.

“The audience is smarter than us,” Bruckheimer explained. “They’re loving this movie, they’re appreciating the ending, which is the best you can ask for.”

The film is a welcome sight for the film-goers after the film was shelved for two years due to the pandemic.

“I think cinemas need this, the masses need to come back and enjoy the great entertainment on those big screens,” he said. “I love watching movies in theaters and that’s why we made this film.”

When it comes to the decades-long gap between the two movies, Bruckheimer promises it’s worth the wait, especially considering how much Tom Cruise has grown over the decades.

“Top Gun: Maverick takes full advantage of Tom’s experience of the past 36 years,” Bruckheimer explained. “When you see it, you’ll understand why we waited. It was the perfect time to photograph.”

The filmmakers and actors literally put their all into the project and made sure to do justice to this film. It took three months to train the cast of the film to join the F-18. So whatever you see the actors doing, they are actually doing it.

“When the plane is going up, they are going up. When the plane is going sideways, they are going sideways,” Bruckheimer said. “What they went through was extraordinary. A lifetime of filmmaking in one film for these actors.”

While the high-flying stunts and nonstop action are much-awaited, it is the message of the films that can really hit it home. “It’s really a movie you’ll be excited for, it’s just what the world needs,” Bruckheimer explained. “It’s about character, and sacrifice.”

With the success of the sequel, Bruckheimer is not looking forward to another installment of the film. “Let’s enjoy it,” he laughed. “If it takes that long, I won’t be around.”

If you hit the theaters this weekend to see the film, you might see the iconic producer in the seat next to you. While he is waiting for the box office numbers, he is going to the movies to see the reaction from the crowd.

“My thrill is watching them applaud, laugh, cry, whatever,” he explained. “If we can give audiences two hours of entertainment where they can forget what’s happening in the world, or their family or whatever is bad in this world—because the world is turned upside down as we all know— We did our job.”

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is in theaters now.
