Jen Campion raised eyebrows at the 2022 Critics’ Choice Awards with a painfully funny joke comparing her to Serena and Venus Williams.
While accepting Best Director for “The Power of the Dog” at Sunday’s ceremony, Campion noted that she was competing against five men, in which case she claimed that the Williams sisters had never found themselves on a tennis court. Will not be able
Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”), referring to Guillermo as she laughed, “I also want to give my love to my fellow mates – friends, nominees.” Del Toro (“Nightmare Alley”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”) and Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”).
“And Serena and Venus, you are such a miracle,” Campion continued. “However, you don’t play against people like me.”
The camera snapped at 41-year-old Venus, who looked awkwardly from her seat. Serena, 40, seemed less upset by the comment as she smiled and clapped her hands in the air. (The sisters were joined as guests by Will Smith, who played their father in “King Richard.”)
Campion, 67, ended her speech by saying, “I’m like the grandmother of the women’s movement in film now. But I’m still here! Thank you!”
Critics took to social media to call out the director as a tone-deaf comment.
Actress Jodie Turner-Smith, who attended the event with husband Joshua Jackson, said: “Jane took the time from her Best Director speech to tell two black women that she is more oppressed than they are, peak white feminism.” tweeted,
“Critic’s Choice: The Winner Is Jane Campion! Jane: Thank You. Now, Let Me Attack Black Women Who Mind Their Own Bad Business,” one viewer tweeted,
“Wow… the Jane Campion train was really short-lived. White women really only come to black women,” a second person said. wrote,
“Jane Campion actually got on stage and decided to tear up two black women for no f—king reason,” a third Agreed,
“What Jane Campion said in her speech wasn’t funny or appropriate. It was racist. White people laugh, and it was pointless to think about why there are still so many nasty issues in this industry. They’re okay with casual racism.” Because they don’t see racism the way we do. tweeted,
However, there did not appear to be any hard feelings between the tennis pros and Campion, as they were seen dancing together at an afterparty. Post pictures on social media,
