SACRAMENTO – State Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Red Bluff) honored Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 582 of Butte County on Wednesday, California Nonprofit Day, as the 2022 Nonprofit of the Year at the state capitol.

One hundred and nine nonprofits were honored at Capital Steps.

“VVA Chapter 582 has been a great partner to veterans and the community after many disasters and was instrumental in getting the Campfire-burned Paradise and Maglia residents to rebuild,” said Nielsen district coordinator and legislative aide Sadie Foster.

According to a press release, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 582 aims to promote and support the full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and change public perceptions of Vietnam veterans. Is.

“It is a profound honor to receive this award from Senator Nielsen,” Ron Matheson, president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 582, said in the release. “It warms my heart to help Vietnam veterans hit the streets.”

VVA 582’s core program is Butte County Veterans Stand Down, which helps provide resources to local veterans who are struggling, with an emphasis on lifting veterans out of homelessness. According to the release, canteens, sleeping bags, shoes and jackets were given free of cost to veterans at the 2021 event in Chico in October.

“It’s their biggest event, they get local resources like housing and medical information,” Foster said.

Foster said the office is planning another program in Butte County to give Chapter 582 a larger, ready-made resolution from the state Senate in the Butte County program. The date of the event has not been decided yet. During this, a certificate was given to the group.

Nielsen served as chairman of the Senate Veterans Committee and was the only Republican to chair a committee.

“Nielsen is passionate about taking care of veterans by country and state,” Foster said. “Veterans can get benefits, transportation is provided, (veterans administration) helped to come along and get paperwork and find housing. It helps to get veterans out of bad situations And they get the resources they deserve.”

“The services and support VVA 582 provides to our Vietnam veterans is vital and a powerful contribution to their quality of life in Senate District 4,” Nielsen said in the release.
