Jockey Agent Ron Anderson wants to add more Breeders’ Cup wins

Mike Smith leads all jockeys with 26 Breeders’ Cup wins, eight more than Johnny Velázquez. D. Wayne Lucas leads the trainers with 20 wins, three more than Bob Baffert.

But what many people who pay attention to the Breeders’ Cup each year can’t tell you that the clients of jockey agent Ron Anderson have won 36 championship races since the event’s debut at Hollywood Park in 1984. No one else is even close.

“I’m at a point in my life where I say to everyone, ‘If you don’t cut your horn sometimes, especially in this business, no one will cut it for you,'” said Anderson, 66. . A telephone interview on Wednesday. “It’s our Super Bowl day. You’ve got to be lucky in many ways, but one of the ways you’re lucky is that you’ll be in the right place on the preparation days that come here. It’s a lot of accounting, but it’s going to be a big deal.” Luck is also involved.”

Anderson licensed his agent in 1973 by taking the book for Robert Howard from Maryland. Then she got her big break in her career in 1980 when she began a 10-year relationship with the underrated Fernando Toro.

“I like to tell people that if I’m ever considered good, it’s because of my 10 years with them,” Anderson said. “I was trying to get him into the Hall of Fame, but he was too West Coast to a lot of voters who are East Coast. That kind of contributes to them not recognizing him.”

He now represents two of the biggest names in the sport, Velazquez and Joel Rosario.

“I had Gary (Stevens) and Kent Desormeaux and I had Gary and Chris Antley,” Anderson said. “So I had two guys at first, but I never made them this special, both riders.”

Which raises the question, how does he keep both of them happy? An advantage of having two special riders is that when one is out of town fulfilling a wager obligation, the other may be available.

“As long as any of these people are winning, they are always happy,” he said. “I’ve been so lucky that none of them got a huge lull. Everyone in the world should have the luxury of working for Joel Rosario and Johnny Velazquez. They’re great people at the start, they get it They are gentlemen, they are not bothered by anything or anyone, and they root for all.”

Anderson has Rosario lined up to ride in 12 of 14 races this weekend, and Velazquez has mounted in 11.

Velazquez Philly and Mare will ride 3-5 morning-line favorite Gamine in the sprint and Rosario has mounts on Echo Zulu (4-5) in the Juvenile Phillies and Jackie Warrior (6-5) in the sprint.

There’s a good chance Anderson will be involved in those 36 Breeders’ Cup wins.

“At this point, you have to be lucky. We will see what happens,” he said.

He’s been around long enough to know that the game has extreme ups and downs.

One of Anderson’s lowest moments came in 2014 when he had the opportunity to take the call on American Pharoah at Del Mar Futurity for Rosario. But instead of talking on the phone, she took a text from trainer Bob Baffert, saw that Pharaoh was still a young woman, and took the pass.

“If I had just picked up the phone and talked to (Baffert) for 20 seconds, Joel would be on American Pharoah and not Victor Espinoza,” Anderson said.
