Jonathan dos Santos’ Galaxy career comes to an end after five seasons

Galaxy announced on Monday that midfielder Jonathan dos Santos will not return for the 2022 season.

Dos Santos, who joined Galaxy in 2017, has been out of contract. He had earned a designated player spot on the Galaxy roster.

Earlier this season, he became the 30th player in Galaxy history to appear in 100 career regular-season games.

“We thank Jonathan for his contribution to the LA Galaxy,” club president Chris Klein said in a statement. “In five seasons with Galaxy, Jonathan was a valuable contributor and leader to us. We greatly appreciate his work ethic, professionalism and passion during his time with our club and we wish him all the best.

Dos Santos joined Galaxy from Villarreal in La Liga, Spain, together with his brother Giovanni.

In 2019, he made 29 appearances, which was his highest performance in a season. Injuries and international duties for Mexico kept him out of the lineup during his career.

Dos Santos had an annual salary of $2 million with the Galaxy.

Galaxy also announced that it had exercised the contract options of goalkeepers Jonathan Klinsmann, defenders Nick DePeau and Daniel Streis, and midfielders Daniel Aguirre and Adam Saldana.

The club did not select the options for goalkeeper Eric López, midfielder Viktor Vázquez and forward Ethan Zubak, but remains in discussions regarding a return for next season.

The Galaxy rejected options from Kai Koreniuk and Augustine Williams and defenders Daniel Acosta and O’Neill Fischer.

Midfielder Sacha Klejston has been out of contract, but the club remains in talks with him to return.
