Justin Timberlake joins wife Jessica Biel in ‘Candy’ episode

Viewers may recognize a familiar face watching Thursday’s episode of “Candy,” starring Jessica Biel: Biel’s husband, Justin Timberlake.

The musician and actor plays a deputy who investigates the murder that the show centers around.

The project’s co-executive producer, Biel, says Timberlake first contacted his producing partner, Michelle Purple, who wanted to get involved.

“He had this whole plan. At first I didn’t even know. And then I thought he was joking. And then he said, ‘No, really, I want to do this.’ And then it was off to the races. She was getting a wig fitting, it was so much fun and such a great surprise.”

Beale admitted to being concerned about whether their dynamic would “translate to work” at first, but that quickly went away.

“I really felt at complete peace when he was around. Like, I knew he was going to have that kind of safe space for me to work in the way I needed to be and to be non-judgmental and open and free.” And he gave me the freedom to improvise, which he is very good at and I am less comfortable with.

In “Candy”, Biel plays Candy Montgomery, a young, outgoing, church-going wife and mother in Texas who reads romance novels. She seems to have it all – but she is bored – so she starts an affair with a man from her town (played by Pablo Schreiber) and kills his wife Betty with an axe. Montgomery pleaded not guilty to the crime and a jury sided with him, some even saying he did not like Betty.

The story is based on a real case from the 1980s and is currently sparking interest in Hollywood. Elizabeth Olsen recently filmed her limited series edition called “Love and Death”, in which she plays Candy.

Melanie Lynskey, who plays Betty, hopes the story will evoke compassion for the victim, and people will see how the trial was a popularity contest.

“As someone who has spent a lot of my life aptly being a little girl, I really, really responded to it and how deeply inappropriate it was,” she said.

Timberlake isn’t the only surprise casting on the show: Lynskey’s husband, Jason Ritter, plays Timberlake’s partner. A memorable moment is when the two recreate the crime as part of their investigation.

Beale credits “Candy” co-creator and showrunner Robin Wyeth for the idea of ”making the two of them partners in crime along with Jason”. It tickled us,” Biel said.

Biel wears a wig with short, curly brown hair in the series which has attracted a lot of attention. She jokes that this is the same hairstyle her husband did with his boy band NSYNC in the late ’90s.

“He definitely had that hairstyle,” Biel said. I always ask, “Please grow those beautiful curls back. I love that curly hair. I know. It’s so weird. We were laughing at that.”
