No matter what type of defense the USC women’s basketball team was running for, each player seemed trained to take one look at UCLA’s Karisma Osborne.
She shifted to point guard once again on Sunday night as the Bruins played 68-58 at the Gallen Center for their second win in four days against the Trojans.
USC (9-7, 2-5 in the Pac-12) defended Osborne aggressively, but Junior still managed to reach double digits in scoring by halftime. She finished the game with 27 points, surpassing her previous season’s high of 26 and six rebounds.
His team built around his game and matched his confidence. The Bruins (9-4, 4-1 in the Pac-12) shot 71.4% from beyond the arc in the first quarter for an early advantage with Osborne, Natalie Chow and Dominic Onu, each of whom scored at least a 3- Pointer created.
Chow finished the game with 10 points and four rebounds. IImar’I Thomas, who is third in the Pac-12 in points per game, was once again a consistent contributor with 14 points and a 50% score.
The Trojans scored threes twice in time to reduce the deficit to 28–25, but Osborne made six free throws to help UCLA advance to 38–29 at halftime.
USC picked up the pace in the second half, just days after losing by nearly 20 points to the Bruins, with a Clarice Akunwafo’s layoff putting the Trojans within three points of the lead. Osborne and Aymar’i Thomas combined for a seven-point run in the third quarter to thwart USC’s attempt.
With five minutes remaining in the game, Osborne was forced to pull out of the game with an apparent injury. She got help off the court, but she was playing again shortly after. Good news for the UCLA bench which is already shorthanded by injuries.
Arizona is ahead for UCLA, with a tipoff at the Paulie Pavilion on Wednesday at 5 p.m. USC travels to the state of Oregon for the 7 p.m. game on Thursday.
