Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal on the future of Spider-Man and the MCU

Godzilla did his best, along with Shang-Chi, James Bond, Venom and the Fast and the Furious. But launching the box office after the pandemic closed – re-managing the culture – took much longer than Hollywood had anticipated.

Finally, it came on Thursday when Spider-Man: No Way Home was released exclusively in theaters.

According to Sony Pictures Entertainment, which funded and produced the film in partnership with Disney-owned Marvel Studios, No Way Home grossed $ 50 million in Thursday previews that began at 3:00 pm. It was the third largest preview result in a Hollywood history book after Avengers Endgame ($ 60 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($ 57 million).

Over the weekend in North America, ticket sales for the sensational hit series No Way Home could surpass $ 150 million. Since Star Wars: Skywalker Rise in 2019, no film has received more than $ 90 million in first weekend sales, according to Comscore.

“No Home” directed by John Watts marks the end of a trilogy in which Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker and Zendaya as Michael Jackson, his courageous romantic double. But the $ 200 million sequel also represents the culmination of nearly 20 years of Spider-Man films – eight in total – because it features characters unseen since Spider-Man 3 in 2007 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. in 2014.

Two people have been involved in the franchise in one capacity or another since its inception: Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige. As CEO of Sony from 1999 to 2015, Pascal was responsible for the first five live Spider-Man films; she produced the last three. Feige has worked on early Spider-Man films in various capacities, initially in relative obscurity, and has produced the last three films in his role as President of Marvel Studios.

These two talked to me on video from their homes in Los Angeles. These are edited excerpts from the conversation, including – be careful – some No Way Home spoilers.

Let’s start simple. Kevin, please create your future roadmap for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Spider-Man. I need details.

FEIGE Which?

What’s the next MCU crossover movie? “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” due in May? Maybe that Fantastic Four reboot? Don’t say “I don’t know” because I know that you know.

FEIGE He will appear someday. When and where, of course, the most interesting thing, which we do not talk about.

What about the next standalone Spider-Man movie? Amy, you said last month that you and Kevin – Sony and Disney – were going to work on three more, which seemed to take the studio by surprise.

PASCAL We are producers, so we always believe that everything will work out. I love working with Kevin. We have a great partnership with Tom Rothman, who runs Sony and plays an important role, a great leader with great ideas. Hope this will last forever.

Sounds like a classic Hollywood walk back.

FEIGE Amy, Disney and Sonya and I are talking about – yes, we are actively starting to develop, in the direction in which the story will go further, which I only say directly, because I do not want fans to go through any kind of separation trauma, like that what happened after Far. From home” [the previous Spider-Man movie, in 2019]… This time it won’t happen.

PASCAL At the end of the movie we just filmed, you see Spider-Man making an important decision that you’ve never seen before. This is a sacrifice. And that gives us a lot of work for the next movie.

This film “No Way Home” features the main characters and stars from the franchise created 20 years ago. How are you going to surpass this?

PASCAL Not every Spider-Man movie will feature multiple characters. This approach was the right one for that.

You cannot think of surpassing yourself in terms of the spectacle. Otherwise, the films just keep getting bigger and bigger for no reason, and that’s not a very good result. But we want to always try to surpass ourselves in terms of quality and emotion. Kevin and I never want to lose sight of one thing: Peter Parker. That he is a normal child. That he remains an orphan over and over again. That he is a teenager, so everything in his life is on a heightened level, and everything matters more than anything else. That he feeds on kindness and guilt. That he is striving for a bigger cause, and the press condemns him.

What was the biggest challenge for the producer of “No Way Home”?

FEIGE Get everyone to agree with you on a cool, big idea. “Hey, we have an idea. You sign up and be in this movie. ” “Cool! Can I read the script?” “No.” That was the hardest part. And this is where Amy, who calls anyone anytime, anywhere, is a master at making things happen.

I read somewhere, Amy, that you FaceTimed with Tom Holland when he was in the bathroom. Do you have screenshots so I can check this information?

It’s true. And no, I will not share.

Who signed the latest No Way Home star?

FEIGE Not who you think of. It’s not worth talking about, but not who you are thinking about.

What would you like to say to skeptical actors?

PASCAL That it will not be a cameo for the purpose of getting money. The details were real. That I was there with them for the first time and will be again, that I respect them too much and all the work that we have done together over the years.

Why weren’t Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone, protagonists from previous Spider-Man films, brought back for this?

FEIGE When people watch the movie, they will understand. It’s about history. It was a big goal for all of us – Amy, John and our writers Chris McKenna and Eric Sommers – to ensure that Peter Parker’s final year of high school doesn’t get lost in the madness that came with his meeting with Doctor Strange. This could easily have happened. And this is the reason that there are no other 20 people in the film.

Speaking of women, will we ever see a woman with superpowers next to Spider-Man? Isn’t there a storyline in the comics where MJ can test the Iron Spider armor?

PASCAL Never say never. [She offers a coy smile.]

FEIGE We have a lot of storylines, Brooks! A lot from storylines. It all comes down to these great, great actors. I think your question is not so much about what MJ did in the comics, but about “Zendaya is really great. Can we see her more? “

Toby and Kirsten. Emma and Andrew. Tom and Zendaya. Why are all of your leading actors end up falling in love in real life? It can’t just be spandex.

PASCAL I took Tom and Zendaya separately when we first dropped them and lectured them. Don’t go there – just don’t go. Try not. I gave the same advice to Andrew and Emma. It might just complicate things, you know? And they all ignored me.

Can you give Tom some advice from me? Don’t lie to reporters! In an interview over the past year, he said Toby and Andrew did not return

PASCAL Well, he can’t reveal what’s in the movie. You didn’t expect him to do this. Forgive him.

And one last question for you: what is the truth about how Pascal and Feige’s production collaboration began? As far as I’m concerned, you, Amy, then the Sony director, filmed the 2014 sequel to Amazing Spider-Man, which was pretty shaky. And that you called Kevin and said, “Help.”

PASCAL It’s true. I called Kevin and said, “Help.” And then he came to my office for lunch and said: “I know how to help you.” And then I threw a sandwich at him.

FEIGE She said, “I really want you to help with this next movie. We have great ideas for the next one. This is amazing “. And I said, “I don’t know how to give advice and leave. I only know how to help if we make a film for you. “

Cuts to flying BLT or something.

FEIGE It was a rather humble sandwich. I don’t remember which one. But yes, she didn’t like the offer.

PASCAL And then Kevin called me, walked up to the house and said, “I have an idea. What if Tony Stark makes Peter’s suit? “And as soon as he said that, I realized what we can do together. For Iron Man and Spider to be in the same world, based more on technological innovation – a new suit – and less on medical experiments, in which we were limited before, it seemed much more modern.

It took a lot of work. But look at the results. Pretty fantastic, right?
