Khaleel Mack will undergo foot surgery and is out for the season, Akim Hicks will not play on Sunday and Alan Robinson is doubtful for the Chicago Bears

A tsunami of injury developments crashed into Halas Hall on Friday. The Chicago Bears now have to show how well equipped they are to handle this latest flurry of adversity with another season slipping away.

Khalil Mack is done for the year, is formally placed on injured reserve Friday afternoon and is scheduled to undergo left leg surgery next week. It is the most significant blow for the Bears as they push to break a four-game losing streak on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens at Soldier Field.

“It’s part of the game. You try to handle things the right way,” said coach Matt Nagy. “I know he’s disappointed because he’s such a competitor. But it is the best thing for her and the best position to be able to help and heal her. ,

Still, Mack’s exit from the 2021 phase is far from the only difficulty the Bears have to work with. Defensive lineman Akim Hicks was declared out for Sunday, who is still battling a serious groin injury. Meanwhile, receiver Alan Robinson is suspected of playing with a hamstring problem that kept him out of practice all week. And veteran linebacker Danny Trevathan was also transferred to IR on Friday with a knee injury.

At 3-6 and without a win since Week 5, the Bears will be tested again, and their ability to adapt will prove crucial to keeping this season on track.

Mack has been battling a foot problem since late September, initially playing through pain for four games in October despite minimal practice time. The Bears opted to put him on the shelf in Week 8 against the San Francisco 49ers in the hope that the extra time could help matters and allow him to get back on the field.

But Mack dropped out the last two games and then did not show substantial improvement in his leg injury, with extra down time during the bye week. Thus it was decided for him to undergo surgery to remove the injury.

Nagy was asked Friday about the specifics of Mack’s injury and what procedure he will be aiming to fix next week, but only offered a vague response saying the issue is related to one of Mack’s toes.

“It is for the doctors and all of them. It is not for me,” Nagy said. “All I know is that we made this decision. … it’s not my profession.”

The Bears signed 34-year-old edge rusher Bruce Irvine to their practice squad on Friday and promoted Cassius Marsh to the active roster, a move designed to help make up for Mack’s absence. But it remains to be seen how much Irvine can help and how quickly, especially as the Bears have two games and little practice time over a five-day period.

Irvine is in his 10th season in the league, but played only two games for the Seattle Seahawks last season, before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. That injury eventually required two surgeries, most recently in January, and Irvine’s first football practice in 14 months was Friday’s season at Lake Forest.

Negi said Irwin made a good first impression with a workout initially on Thursday and then on Friday during his first day at work. “I like his energy and I like his mindset,” Koch said.

But Negi also knows that the Bears’ coaching staff needs to quickly find out where Irwin is mentally and physically. And the only way to assess this would be on the practice field.

“It’s the only place we can do it,” Nagy said. “He has to tell us how he feels.”

Mack had a great start this season. He had six sacks in the seven matches he played and the resurgence of the defense was a key factor in the pass rush. Now the bear will move on without him.

“There’s no way you can fill his shoes,” said Eddie Goldman. “But try to get to the quarterback as far as you can.”

Even Bear can’t be sure when Hicks struggles with his groin problem. The 32-year-old defensive lineman will miss his third match this season and 15th in the last three years.

Robinson may also be out of action, leaving a passing attack to work through contingency plans. Other receivers on the 53-man roster are Darnell Mooney, Marquis Goodwin, Damier Bird and return specialist Jackiem Grant. Nagy hinted on Friday that Rodney Adams and Isaiah Coulter could be candidates for weekend promotions to the game-day roster.
