In the documentary Kurt Vonnegut: Not Stuck in Time, the importance of the writer is taken for granted, although years after his death in 2007, his perceived importance is still causing conflicts on social media. Likewise, when Robert B. Weide, who directed this film with Don Argott, describes the themes of a Vonnegut novel he read as a teenager, he concludes by saying, “What schoolboy isn’t going to swallow this? “Viewers with more mature standards, however, may grimace.
Vonnegut’s breakthrough novel was very difficult to write. “Unstuck in Time” – chronicle “Slaughterhouse # 5” and other works of the author. Slaughterhouse Five (1969), with its gruesome description of the Allied bombings that destroyed Dresden during World War II, has become a counterculture classic. Vonnegut was there as a prisoner of war. It took him a long time to write the book, in part because of his unwillingness to go back to past trauma.
The novel’s vanity – including the claim that its character, Billy Pilgrim, is “not stuck in time,” hopping around his own life like a pinball ball – were conveyed in a deceptively relaxed and approachable manner. (The book was based on a well-received film, released in 1972.)
Much of the documentary is about Waide’s many years of work on this project and his friendship with Vonnegut. This is a double portrait that undermines the title of the film somewhat.
“I didn’t want to be in this movie at all,” says Veide, who has directed documentaries and several seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, a little sly. No Being in the movies is the easiest thing in the world if you put in your best effort.
In any case, the structure of the film is determined – and sometimes distorted – by the fact that it persistently tells the story of the writer and his cinematic Boswell. If you can handle it, Unstuck in Time really has its revelations and rewards.
