The 49ers are going to spend another week purring.
And this time the forecast calls for rain.
There was no fanfare and circumstance for Jimmy Garoppolo to be named as the 49ers’ starting quarterback once again for Sunday night’s game against the Colts. As of Wednesday, he was the only healthy quarterback, so he is the pick for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Of course, if injury hadn’t interfered, Shanahan would have played Garoppolo over Trey Lance this week anyway. Obviously, he gives the Niners “the best chance to win”.
we will see. This is a claim that is getting questionable by the day.
What we do know is that the NFL is a head coach and quarterback league, and the arrangement between Shanahan and Garoppolo in Santa Clara is not working.
There’s a reason Lance is on the roster.
You might say, “Dieter, as a 49ers starter under Jimmy Garoppolo Shanahan, is 24-10.”
And yes, it is factual.
But five of those victories came at the end of a bizarre 2017 season and 13 on the back of one of the strongest overall teams in the NFL.
I’m not discounting those wins, just providing context. Garoppolo deserves credit for that success – he was stellar for some of those competitions. But it’s also the quarterback who was largely considered a liability in the 2019 playoffs, and then lived up to that threat in the Super Bowl.
Garoppolo is an improved version of Jared Goff, who went 42–20 under Sean McVay in Los Angeles, received a major contract with the Rams after going to the Super Bowl, and then inadvertently sent Detroit this past offseason. given where he didn’t win and his new head coach is calling him out after six matches.
I wonder what will happen to Garoppolo when Shanahan is no longer calling plays for her.
We’ll find out soon, but not too soon to my liking.
Garopolo is a lame-duck quarterback. If not for injuries and the misplaced loyalty of Shanahan—a coach looking down the pipe to lose a record four of his five seasons—Jimmy G would already be on the bench.
The inevitable won’t last long.
I understand the weak conditions this week, but what’s the end game if Shanahan keeps Garoppolo at quarterback, as he wants to do?
Nine wins, best?
Perhaps the last wild card spot in NFC?
How does this help the Niners struggle for the Super Bowl in the future?
Garoppolo wasn’t enough to keep Lance off the roster. Why would he be considered so good now that he could save his job and hold Lance for another year?
At the same time, Shanahan seems to have little interest in working through the growing pains that come with the quarterback he drafted third overall.
As far as Lance is concerned, he sits and watches. Is this the best way for him to learn what it takes to win in the NFL? To win with these 49?
The leash for quarterbacks in the NFL is shorter than ever. Sam Darnold played 38 games for the Jets before he decided he was not the guy for them. After Darnold’s first five games in Carolina, the Jets look like they made the right decision.
Tua Tagovailoa had even less time in Miami – 12 starts – but his name is now part of every trade rumour.
In a league where the scheme is considered to fit the talent of the quarterback, you don’t need a full rookie contract to find out whether the kid has it.
What young quarterbacks need are some reps to determine if they are just capable or possibly great.
Perhaps Shanahan will see the light and realize that the sooner he plays Lance, the sooner he can figure out what it takes to succeed in the NFL in the No. 3 overall pick. If Shanahan makes this decision early, he could stand a chance of having the child alive in Santa Clara.
If he waits, he’s putting his career as head coach of the 49ers in the hands of Lance.
They may prove capable – I am fast. They might not either.
Meanwhile, there is a game on Sunday in front of national TV audiences.
Is the Garoppolo starter returning to his role? Moving backups for a week?
does it matter?
Either way, this team cannot move on to bigger and better things by being at the center of No. 10, as he is not a part of this team’s future.
And unless the quarterback is changed — permanently — we all have to hang out with Jimmy G and Kyle in the purgatory.
