Kyrgios beat favorite Medvedev in Montreal

MONTREAL ( Associated Press) – Nick Kyrgios beat top-ranked defending champion Daniil Medvedev 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 at the Montreal Open on Wednesday.

World ranking 37th-ranked Australian Kyrgios won his seventh ATP title in Washington last week. Russian Medvedev was crowned last week in Los Cabos, Mexico.

“I had a very clear objective today of how I want to play, with lots of serves and volleys, which is a very aggressive game from the baseline,” Kyrgios said. “I did better than him and that’s what it all comes down to. He won the first set and I think I had my chances too, so I hope to keep going.

Kyrgios is 3-1 against Medvedev and has won 14 out of 15 matches. Novak Djokovic was defeated in the Wimbledon final.

“This is our fourth match and I have had some success against him in the past,” Kyrgios said. “But he has beaten me before. I think we know our game very well. I’m not the kind of player who approaches matches by looking at the standings or anything like that, I just watch what I’m up against and what kind of balls he throws at me”.

Earlier, American Tommy Paul defeated second seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), 6-3.

Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas defeated Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-2.

Also fourth seed Kasper Rudd of Norway defeated Alex Molken of Slovakia 7-6(3), 6-3 and eighth seed Hubert Herkaz of Poland defeated Finn Emil Rusuvuori 6-3, 6-7(4), 6 beat -2.

Britain’s Cameron Norie (9th) defeated Dutchman Boutik van de Zandschulp 6-1, 6-2 and Taylor Fritz (10th) defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
