Kyrgios completes match and lead at Washington Open

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) — Nick Kyrgios needed 14 minutes to complete a rain-interrupted game the day before, beating Reilly Opelka 7-6(1), 6-2 on Friday.

Saving energy was important for Kyrgios and the other players, who played in high heat and humidity in this hard-court tournament that served as preparation for the US Open.

Australian Kyrgios, a finalist in the most recent edition of Wimbledon and the 2019 champion in Washington, was due to return to court in the evening for a quarterfinal match against Frances Tiafoe, who grew up near the US capital in Maryland.

Activity was suspended again on Friday afternoon due to a lightning storm.

If the situation improves, there are other tennis players who will play two matches on Friday. There is a top seed Andrey Rublev, who came from behind in the second set tiebreak after beating Maxim Crecy 6-4, 7-6 (8).

The Russian is looking for his fourth ATP title of the year, which will be on par with Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz with the highest figures. He would meet local JJ Wolf, who entered the tournament by invitation and reached the quarterfinals for the first time on the tour, winning 7–5, 4–6, 6–3 over Holger Rune.

Another American Sebastian Korda defeated fifth seed Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

In the women’s section, veteran Victoria Azarenka (4th) beat Tereza Martinkova 7-6(7), 6-2 in the first set of 80 minutes and Estonian Kaia Kanepi (6th) beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-7(4) 6-4, 6-3, in a duel that lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

US Open champion Emma Radukanu will face Lyudmila Samsonova on Friday night. Then, Azarenka will play her second duel of the day against Jiu Wang.
