The Church urges education authorities to set a good example for children

In view of the current discussion about the new free textbooks (LTG), the Catholic Church calls on those involved in education to set a good example for children, adolescents, and young people and to prioritize a fruitful and supportive dialogue.

In the editorial of his Weekly From Faith, he reiterated that while books are resources, education occurs in people-to-people encounters, and that means parents and teachers have important responsibilities to be prepared for.

In this context, he pointed out that several sectors had expressed their concerns about the content and quality of the texts, which did not take into account the voices of specialized sectors and experts on the subject.

However, he pointed out that a few hours after the class started, he remembered that the most important thing was the children and not the books, which were just an educational tools.

“We are not saying that the failures and mistakes made in the realization of the new books should no longer be emphasized, but rather that there are other issues that should catch our attention and give them relevance.”

“Are parents paying enough attention to their children’s education? Do they follow their educational process at home and share responsibility with the school?”

Are teachers continuously trained to meet the pedagogical challenges that arise? Are the education authorities listening to teachers’ experiences and their realities?”

He noted that this week’s written statement on the subject, the Mexican Bishops’ Conference, noted: “Improvisation and confusion are evident in many parts of the version of the LTG now presented.” However, we trust in the work of the classroom teachers, who through their education, experience, and communication with parents will be able to salvage valuable elements for their students.”

Because of this, he was confident “that the start of the 2023–2024 school year will be very positive. We pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe will accompany and protect our children and illuminate their path so that in the future they will pay for building a better country.”
