LAFC acquires midfielder Kellyanne Acosta from Colorado

Another important piece in the revamped midfield of the Los Angeles Football Club was revealed on Friday.

US national team midfielder Kellyanne Acosta has been acquired from Colorado Rapids for $1.5 million in general allocation money, pending the 26-year-old Texan reaching certain performance limits.

LAFC will exchange $550,000 in 2022, $550,000 in 2023 and $400,000 more if Acosta delivers on the field, as well as a percentage of future transfer fees, a proven, steady hand in Major League Soccer and internationals. For.

Acosta was instrumental in Rapids’ Western Conference title in 2021, and his 21 appearances in a calendar year for American men topped Landon Donovan’s 2002 campaign.

He shared his excitement for the new chapter of his career on social media.

Holding and comfortable in box-to-box rules, Acosta was on the field in all three of the American men’s victories over Mexico in 2021. The only American to start and play every minute of Nations League and Gold Cup championship-cleaning matches, Acosta hit a cross to Miles Robinson to put the United States ahead in the 117th minute of the Gold Cup final without a scoreless fight.

“Kelin is a player who has all the qualities needed to play in midfield,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a release. “He provides the versatility and ability to help our team immediately. He is in his prime, a fixture in our national team, and provides the MLS experience we sought in the off-season.”

The transaction is the second inter-conference move between LAFC and Colorado in the past six months. Last July, LAFC traded Canadian international midfielder Marc-Anthony Kaye to the Rapids for $1 million in general allocation amounts.

Acosta made his debut for FC Dallas in 2013 as an 18-year-old domestic player. Three years later, he was the US Open Cup and Supporters Shield champion.

In 2018, Dallas traded Acosta to Rapids.
