The registration deadline for the United States Diversity Visa Program known as Visa Lotteryopen until Tuesday, November 7.
The program, according to the US State Department, allows people from countries with low immigration rates in the US and who meet certain requirements, to enter to apply for an immigrant visa.
This program is one of the most anticipated by thousands of Cubans every year who seek to escape the general crisis on the island.
Participation in the visa lottery program is free and applicants must meet several eligibility requirements.
These are: 1) who were born or became the spouse of someone who was born in one of the eligible countries; 2) have secondary education or demonstrate two years of work experience in the last five years in a job that requires at least two years of training.
In the photo, the face should be in the center and the person should be looking at the camera, they should not be wearing glasses or a hat and the background should be clean and without shadows. The image cannot be out of focus.
In last year’s edition, 3,081 Cubans won the lottery number that is more than double the 1,358 provided in fiscal year 2023.
Cuba is the Latin American country that receives the most visas, with a total of 3,150 issued in South America and the Caribbean.
According to a bulletin from the Kentucky Consular Center, the lottery is held by the Immigration and Nationality Act, which provides up to 55,000 permanent resident visas to people from countries with a low rate of immigration to the United States.
The selection is made at random, without considering the number of family members who may migrate with the selected person.
On May 6 of this year, the US government Diversity Visa Program (DV-2024) results were published. However, the number of national winners is not revealed until August.
In the last two years, the number of Cubans entering the US territory has increased significantly.
In the recently ended fiscal year 2023 (FY2023) – from October 1, 2022, to September 30 – a total of 200,287 Cubans sought political asylum in the territory of the United States after entering its land borders, according to official figures from the Customs Department. Border Protection (CBP).
It is added that since the Humanitarian Parole Program was activated – in January of this year – more than 52 thousand Cubans have received permission to travel to the United States, according to official figures from the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the United States.
