Last Minute Kanye West and Taylor Swift became Best Grammy Nominees

The organization behind the Grammy awards decided at a meeting on Monday – just 24 hours before the announcement of this year’s nominees – that the top tiers should expand to 10 nominees out of eight, adding at the last moment stars like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Abba and Lil Nas X to the list of potential winners.

When the nominations were announced live the next morning, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of Recording Academy, welcomed the unexpected shift as a way to “make room for more music, more artists and more genres, and spirit inclusion “.

But the names added included some of the biggest pop stars and people who already voted elsewhere.

For Best Album of the Year, two contenders added to the newsletter were Swift’s “Evermore” and West’s “Donda”, joined by Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Doja Cat, HER, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and John Batiste.

The nod for “Evermore” was Swift’s only nomination for her own music on Tuesday. (She is also nominated as a songwriter in Rodrigo’s Sour.) West’s nomination for Donda propelled him to 75.

It was possible to figure out which artists benefited from the expansion because their names were missing from an early version of the “final nominations list,” which was drawn up a few days before the announcement and only included eight names in those categories. This version began distribution outside of the Recording Academy before the nominations were announced on Tuesday and a copy was obtained by The New York Times.

The expansion of the top categories came after the academy heralded a new era of openness and transparency in the awards process. The 64th annual Grammy will be the first in more than 30 years without the use of anonymous nominating committees, tasked with cutting down voters’ choices to create the final ballot – a move that was intended to protect the integrity of the awards but has been accused of allowing covert manipulation.

Mason supported the proposal to add more nominees as a sign of the new flexible and responsive Recording Academy and said the added names brought new sounds, styles and faces to the top categories. “For us, this is all a positive movement,” he said. “It’s us celebrating more great artists, more great music, giving artists the opportunity to express themselves and showcase their abilities.”

Mason said the artists added to the list were simply the ninth and tenth most voted academy members and were identified by Deloitte, the academy’s longtime partner in collecting and tabulating votes.

In the Record of the Year category, Lil Nas X’s songs “Montero (Call me by your name)” and “I Still Have Faith in You” Abba joined tracks by Rodrigo, Bieber, Bennett and Gaga, Batista, Dodge Cat, Eilish, Silk. Sonic and Brandi Carlisle. This was Abba’s first Grammy nomination.

For song of the year, which featured songwriters, the change was for Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA and “Right on Time” by Carlisle, who was already on the roster for another song, “A Beautiful Noise,” featuring Alicia Keys. Top new performers added rapper Baby Kim and Pakistani American composer and vocalist Uruj Aftab.

Representatives for each of the added artists declined to comment.

Most recently, at the 2018 Grammy, there were just five slots in the top field. In an interview on Wednesday, Mason said the expansion had been considered for years, but that this year’s changes were inspired by his visit last week to the Latin Grammy, which saw up to 12 artists compete in some of the top categories. He said that he and his team quickly proposed and implemented changes.

“It fits perfectly with everything we’ve tried to do over the past six months,” Mason said, “to do justice to excellence in music, serve our music community, and do it thoughtfully but proactively. “

Valeisha Butterfield Jones, co-president of the academy, added: “While this may seem rushed, it was actually a deliberate, well-meaning process that was also data driven,” citing internal numbers showing an increase in voting membership.

Revealing that the list of nominations was expanded ahead of their release – unnoticed by voters until a full vote was announced – is the latest turn in the tumultuous recent history of the Grammy, when the last head of the academy was fired after blaming the institution for rampant conflicts. of interest, and withholding allegations of sexual harassment and rape.

The decision to cancel the 2022 Grammy nominations committee came after years of complaints from artists, especially black rap and R&B musicians who said they were categorized as genre categories but were ultimately not recognized in four overall industry awards. …

Ahead of the latest Grammy Awards, pop star The Weeknd, who was not nominated for her best-selling album, “After Hours,” said he would boycott the awards in the future, calling the Grammys “corrupt.”

The academy stated that without the committees this year, the artists included in the final round of voting were the ones who received the most votes from their music industry peers, and that the expansion to 10 out of eight nominees in the top four categories was made without knowing which artists will benefit.

Winners will be decided by votes from the 11,000 Recording Academy members who must be qualified as working musicians. The ceremony will take place on January 31st in Los Angeles.

Mason also said that the addition of Swift and West – superstars in their own right, whose rivalry is a constant show in the media – was solely a matter of the votes they received and that they were not chosen for their appeal on the Grammy TV show.

“Not a thousand percent,” Mason said. “It was not a consideration.”
