LAX’s new massive parking structure opens Tuesday, Oct. 19

Los Angeles officials celebrated the first major aspect of LAX’s Landslide Access Modernization Program on Friday, October 15—the 4,300-stall LAX Economy parking structure, which will open to the public next week.

The $294 million parking facility at Los Angeles International Airport is four-story, 1.7 million square feet long, and features smart parking technology that allows for pre-booked parking and searching in an intuitive way.

It also has the infrastructure for about 1,600 parking spaces for electric vehicle charging capabilities; More than 500 chargers will be installed in the first year.

“As the world’s third largest airport,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said at Friday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, “LAX is a global crossroads where dreams fly and we welcome the future of our city with open arms .

“The LAX Economy Parking is a historic marker of progress at the airport amid generation-to-generation change,” he said, adding, “Providing passengers a state-of-the-art facility that will help reduce congestion, our airport has been to realize its full potential and create a more seamless travel experience for millions of Angelenos and visitors.”

LAX began conducting a $14.5 billion reform program in 2009. The $5.5 billion Landslide Access Modernization Program was a part of that, though the key component is the Automated People Mover, which, once online in 2023, will stop before the parking facility. “Today we begin a series of grand openings that will transform LAX into the modern, sustainable, public transportation hub of our city,” said Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents the airport’s surrounding areas.

“This milestone is possible because we brought airport neighbors and airport officials together to modernize LAX, reduce its impact on local communities, and make it a first-class neighbourhood,” Bonin said, “Opening the door to major improvements in transportation, job creation and environmental benefits.”

People can start pre-booking a space from Friday before the opening of the new parking structure. Pre-booking LAX gives visitors the best discounts, with starting discounts of up to 70% off the $25 per day drive-up rate. Discount pricing will depend on spot availability and time booked in advance.

“Today is a truly historic day for LAX and Los Angeles as we unveiled this state-of-the-art facility,” said Justin Erbassi, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports.

“Building a better LAX is about much more than just bringing state-of-the-art features online,” he said. “It is about how we build, and we are proud that this facility has grown from the ground up over the years with the help of more than 3,700 craft workers and approximately 850,000 work hours.

To align with Los Angeles World Airport’s Sustainability Action Plan, the structure will include energy-saving lighting controls, dedicated parking lots for low-emissions vehicles and car pools, low-flow plumbing fixtures, drought-tolerant landscaping and recyclables, officials said. There is water facility.

He also designed the structure with a mid-century modern aesthetic to match the rest of LAX.
