LDS Church Begins Construction of New Temple in Yorba Linda, Only 9th in California

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made a fresh start this weekend in Yorba Linda.

The church on Saturday laid the foundation of a new temple, its ninth in California and the second in Orange County.

Art Francis, communications director for the church’s local Anaheim ordination council, said the temple will serve the LDS community within an 18-square-mile radius, providing space for the church’s “most sacred worship, ceremonies and sacraments.”

It is replacing the small church building on Bastanachuri Road; City planners approved the project in May.

Francis said the temple’s design was modified from its original proposal after feedback from the city and community.

The temple’s proposed minaret was lowered from 99 feet to 70 feet, matching the height of the other two stairs on the city’s churches, and was moved to the front of the building, he said.

He added that the temple also includes a portico, which matches the typical Southern California architecture for a “Spanish mission look”.

Francis said the temple entrance was moved from Osmond Street to Bastanachuri Road to address concerns raised at community meetings.

“We did this as a courtesy to the neighbors,” he said. “We feel, under the advice of our Savior, that we should love our neighbors. It was important to us that they felt that they had their input.”
