MIAMI ( Associated Press) – Robert Lewandowski passed his medical on Monday and declared himself ready to help Barcelona return to the top of European football.
Ahead of the start of the team’s tour in the United States, the Polish striker was set to sign his contract and will be officially presented by Barcelona in Miami on Tuesday.
“It was very easy for me to decide to come to Barca,” Lewandowski said after joining his teammates in Florida. “Barca are back. I think I can help the team return to the top of European football.”
Barcelona in principle struck a deal with Bayern Munich over the weekend to acquire Lewandowski with hopes of receiving around 50 million euros ($50.5 million).
Lewandowski, 33, has been one of the most prolific strikers in the past decade and was voted FIFA Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021. He comes to reinvigorate a team that didn’t win a single title last season after the departure of Lionel Messi. The Catalan club has struggled to strengthen its squad after going through financial problems in recent seasons.
He said, ‘I want us to start winning. “I love to win trophies and this is a new chapter for me, with new challenges… I have always wanted to play in the league and in a bigger one”.
The official signing and presentation were delayed by a day. He met his new teammates at the team hotel on Sunday and said he had already spoken to coach Xavi Hernandez.
“I know about your thoughts. He was a great player and he has a great future ahead of him as a coach,” Lewandowski said.
The Barcelona team, still without Lewandowski, trained on Monday before playing Inter Miami in Florida, and then Real Madrid in Las Vegas, Juventus in Dallas and New York Red Bull in New Jersey.
Forward Ferran Torres has trained separately as he continues to recover from a leg injury. Midfielder Miralem Pjanic completed his last season before moving to France to attend the birth of his second child. The Bosnian will join the team’s tour in the coming days.
