Lizzo has announced that she is releasing a new version of her recent song Grrls with “Song Changes” after receiving backlash over the use of a competent slur within the track.
The pop superstar said that she “never wants to promote abusive language” and that she is “dedicated to being a part of the change I’ve been waiting for in the world”.
It comes as disability charity Scope urged them not to give up on disabled people with their message of “self-acceptance” and to change the lyrics used.
Since Grrrls was released on June 10, Lizzo has faced backlash for using a derogatory term for the condition of spastic cerebral palsy in the opening verse.
Writing on social media, he acknowledged his role “as an influencer” and said the decision was a result of his “listening and taking action”.
“It has been brought to my attention that my new song Grrrls contains a harmful word.
“Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote abusive language.
“As a fat black woman in America, there have been many hurtful words used against me, so I can understand the power words (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally).

“I am proud to say that there is a new version of Grrrls with song changes. It is the result of my listening and taking action.
“As an influential artist I am dedicated to being a part of the change I am waiting for in the world. Xoxo, Lizzo.”
In a previous statement, Scope wrote on Twitter: “Dear @Lizzo, your songs spread the message of self-acceptance.
“Please don’t leave people with disabilities out by using abusive words in your songs. Self-love is a must for everyone. We know you can do better.”
The singer is known to promote body positivity and self-love in her music.
