Lorde takes control of the female body in the wake of US abortion decision

Lorde has called on women to use their inner wisdom during her Glastonbury set in the wake of the US Supreme Court’s decision to nullify the constitutional right to abortion.

During her show on Pyramid Stage on Sunday, she delivered a message about female bodily autonomy, which she ended with saying “F*** the Supreme Court.”

The New Zealand singer, 25, joins several musicians who have condemned the 1973 Roe v Wade regime reversal during the festival, including Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Idols and Phoebe Bridgers.

Near the end of her rendition of Secrets From a Girl (Who Is Seen It All), she changes lyrics to reflect how she feels that female bodies are controlled.

She said: “Wanna hear a secret, girls? Your body was destined to be controlled and objective even before you were born. That terror is your birthright.

“But here’s another secret, you have ancient power, ancient wisdom. The wisdom that has inspired every woman you come across.

“That knowledge is also your birthright. I ask you today to make it your life’s task to reach that knowledge? Because everything depends on it.”

The pop star ended the message by saying “F*** the Supreme Court.”

This marks the Lord’s second appearance at Glastonbury. She last played at the festival in 2017.

Throughout her energetic set, she told the crowd that it was “great to be back” as she featured a selection of her hits, including Buzzcut Seasons, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre, Sober and Royals.

She brought vibrancy to the stage with her outfit – a lilac leotard teamed with red tights and ribbon around her wrist – while her band all wore mustard yellow suits.

The singer also surprised the Glastonbury crowd by bringing out Claro and Arlo Parks to perform her song Stoned together at the nail salon.

Another poignant moment came when she reflected on how she’d dreamed of performing at the festival as a child.

She said: “I used to watch live streams of this festival on video from my bed in New Zealand and wonder what it would be like to stand here singing along with the flag.

“Even as a kid I knew that the Pyramid Stage was a kind of magic, so it’s crazy to be here with you.”

The singer said that over the years she takes such moments “to reduce”.

Lourde’s appearance at Glastonbury was her second after first playing at the festival in 2017 (Eui Mok/PA)

Drawing on the end of her set, she boosted the energy with her song Supercut, which made the crowd jump and sing as the sun was shining on them.

She built on the tempo by debuting her hit Green Light, saying that she thinks of it as a “British song”, making the packed audience cheer before chanting the song for her.

She later added: “Thank you very much, no one can dance to that song like the British crowd.”

Lorde dedicated her last song of the night, Solar Energy, to those who were “with their buds under this beautiful sky” and thanked everyone for their support.

American rapper Kendrick Lamar will follow Lorde on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm in Somerset as the final headliner of the festival.

Next to Lorde, Pyramid Stage hosted the rock band Elbow, who were joined by a 10-year-old Syrian giant puppet and a group of refugees.

Meanwhile Diana Ross went hit after hit when she took to the stage earlier in the day.

The soul singer treated the crowd to a selection of classics including Baby Love, You Can’t Hurry Love, Stop! Pink confetti was launched from the stage at The Name of Love and at the conclusion of the chain reaction.
