Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday when he attended a climate change conference in Glasgow.
The Mayor’s Twitter announces a positive test:
The conference – COP26, hosted by the UN – brought together world leaders and other delegates to set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mr Garcetti attended as chairman of the C40, a group of mayors from around the world who want to take action to tackle climate change.
The conference required participants from outside the UK to undergo both a rapid coronavirus test and a more sensitive PCR test upon arrival in the country. Every day of the conference, participants also had to conduct a quick test on their own and register a negative result online in order to be able to get to the main venues of the event.
Harrison Wallman, the mayor’s spokesman, wrote in an email that Mr. Garcetti “had regular rapid antigen tests every day during the conference, and they all came back negative. He took a PCR test before flying home and the result was positive. “
Mr Garcetti spoke on Monday at the World Leaders Summit and on Tuesday at the C40 event. He skipped some Wednesday activities and isolated himself in his hotel room after testing positive.
Regarding how long the mayor will stay there, Mr. Wallman said: “We are still determining the next steps, but the mayor will follow the advice of British public health experts.”
Disappointment among attendees over the long lines of security at the conference was mounting, with some complaining that they had to queue for more than an hour. Negative test results and limited conference room capacity exacerbated logistical problems.
The conference required masks, but participants could be seen with masks deflated rather than covering their mouths and noses, and there was no social distancing. The crowded conditions have raised concerns that poor air circulation in conference rooms could create an environment conducive to the spread of the virus.
The conference organizers published a letter on Tuesday apologizing for the difficulties.
