After the Guatemalan athlete placed fourth at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last Sunday, Luis Grijalva will compete again in Europe this Thursday with the aim of securing a ticket for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
It will be in the Diamond League of Zurich, Switzerland, on August 31 at 1:30 p.m. (Guatemalan time) in the Letzigrund Athletics Stadium. Luis Grijalva will be the only Latino in the 5,000 meters, and along with US Representatives Grant Fisher and William Kincaid, they are the only Americans. The remaining 16 runners completing the list come from Europe.
This will be the 11th Diamond League event in 2023. It is Luis Grijalva’s third appearance of the year after presentations in Italy (June 2nd) and Norway (June 15th), giving him a new opportunity to look around for the access mark.

In fact, Luis Grijalva has clocked less than the required times at Damond League events. He did it on June 2nd in Florence, Italy, with a time of 12:52.97, and then on June 15th in Oslo, Norway, with a time of 12:56.63, so he will now be looking for the feat in Zurich, Switzerland.
With the record he set in Florence, Italy, of 12:52.97, Luis Grijalva set the national record of 5,000,000 meters while also setting his best Diamond League record.
At this Thursday’s competition, Luis Grijalva will compete with runners from Ethiopia, France, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States.
Currently, José Barrondo is the only Guatemalan athlete to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the 20K walk.
