Lula’s official invitation to visit the United States has been confirmed

Such an invitation came during a hotel conversation with that country’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

«Today I received an invitation from US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, from President Joe Biden to meet with him at the White House. I look forward to speaking with President Biden and deepening the ties between our countries,” Lula wrote on a social network about the appointment with Biden’s adviser.

In addition to President-elect Lula and Sullivan, the following attended the meeting on the US side: Juan Gonzales, United States Government Advisor for Latin America; Ricardo Zúñiga, Deputy Foreign Minister for Western Hemisphere Affairs; and Douglas Koneff, charge d’affaires of the embassy in Brazil.

From Lula’s team, Senator Jacques Wagner, former Minister of Foreign Relations Celso Amorim, and Fernando Haddad of Education were present.

After the meeting, Amorim told the press that Lula had not yet ruled out making the trip in December, but indicated that he would prefer to do so in January after taking office.

«(Lula) appreciated very much the fact that the invitation was done in this way, but perhaps it was not enough to happen (in the United States) before the inauguration. But he thinks he may go on an official visit as president even at the beginning of the year,” said the former chancellor.

At the meeting, Sullivan presented the Workers’ Party founder with a jersey from the American football team that had been knocked out of the World Cup in Qatar.

According to Amorim, who is a member of the transition team in foreign relations, Lula and Sullivan held a “very wide-ranging conversation” for about two hours on regional and world issues such as climate change, the war in Ukraine and UN Security Council reform.

Cooperation for the strengthening and development of democracy and technology in the region was also discussed.

According to Amorim, the talks did not detail how Brazil and the United States could act in the fight against climate change, but recognized the importance of both countries’ commitment.

The South American giant recorded high rates of deforestation in the Amazon during the government of defeated far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, drawing criticism from other countries.
