Machado hits home run; Padres scored 19 runs against Cubs

CHICAGO ( Associated Press) — Manny Machado singled out to reach 1,500 major league hits and added a two-run homer in one night, scoring four for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Chicago Cubs 19-5 on Wednesday.

The Dominican was one of five San Diego batsmen with three hits. The Padres beat the Cubs at Wrigley Field for the second night in a row.

Jorge Alfaro added a two-run homer and went into three as San Diego improved to 40–24, winning their third straight game and their seventh of the last nine.

Jake Cronenworth and Jurikson Proffer hit three hits, including two doubles, to add to the batting festivities for the Padres, who came in the matchup a few percentage points behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Luke Voight hit a single homer off Frank Schwindell in the ninth inning, giving him three hits in the game.

Craig Stamen (1-0) took two innings to win. Caleb Killian (0–1) suffered a loss in his second major league debut.

For the Padres, Venezuelan Jose Azocar 2-0. Dominican Machado scored 4-3 runs with four RBIs, Nomar Mazara with 5-1 and two RBIs, Sergio Alcantara with 2-1 RBIs. Colombian Alfaro 6-3 with three RBIs.

For the Cubs, Dominican Christopher Morrell scored 5-2 and scored three, Jonathan Willer scored 4-1 and scored an RBI. Venezuela’s Wilson Contreras 5-1, Rafael Ortega 1-0.
