Macron remembers the victims of the Holocaust in France

PARIS ( Associated Press) — French President Emmanuel Macron condemned French leaders who sided with the Nazis and promoted anti-Semitism, vowing strongly to end Holocaust denials as they killed thousands of French children on Sunday. sent to death camps. Being Jewish.

From family to family, from house to house, French police arrested more than 13,000 people in two terrible days in July 1942, sending thousands of children to Nazi death camps. France honored those victims this weekend.

For survivors of France’s war crimes, a series of commemoration ceremonies on Sunday were particularly important. In a time of growing anti-Semitism and far-right discourse, there are concerns that lessons of history are being forgotten about France’s role in the Holocaust.

The week of celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of the Val d’Hive police raid on July 16-17, 1942, ended on Sunday with an event led by Macron, who vowed it would never happen again.

“We will continue to teach against ignorance. We will continue to cry out against apathy,” said the president, who condemned former French leaders for their role in the Holocaust and the Val d’Hiv raids, among the most shameful acts committed by France during World War II.

During those two days, police sent 13,152 people, including 4,115 children, to the Paris Winter Velodrome, known as the Val d’Hiv, before sending them to Nazi camps. It was the largest raid of its kind in Western Europe. The children were separated from their families and very few survived.
