A 31-year-old man was stabbed to death during a fight Tuesday night in St Paul, and a passerby who stopped to help stole his vehicle and was injured, according to police.
Police spokesman Steve Linders said a 21-year-old man came upon a stabbing man lying in the street on University Avenue and Victoria Street shortly after 11 p.m.
According to Linders, the man who was stabbed in the neck told police that he got into an argument on the light rail, and he and another man started punching each other as soon as they got off the train. Police said he was stabbed in the carotid artery in his neck and paramedics took him to the region hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Before police arrived, when a 21-year-old passerby was talking to a 911 telecommunications, he said he saw someone stealing his vehicle, which he had left to run. He tried to stop the man, but the thief kept on driving and hit him, causing him to overturn on the vehicle and then fall. Linders said he suffered minor injuries.
No one had been arrested as of Wednesday morning and it was not known whether the same suspect was involved in the stabbing and vehicle theft, but Linders said it was unlikely.
