WASHINGTON – Senator Joe Manchin, the centrist who has been a stumbling block on President Joe Biden’s agenda, denied reports on Wednesday that he could leave the Democratic Party unless his colleagues cut a massive domestic spending bill.

Manchin told reporters that the Mother Jones article about him leaving the party and becoming independent was “bad.” He added that he “has no control over rumors.”

The Senate is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Vice President Kamala Harris deciding draws, meaning Manchin’s defection could potentially transfer control of the House to Republicans.

Manchin was at odds with many of his fellow Democrats on key aspects of Biden’s agenda, from voting rights to climate change. He insisted that the party should substantially cut social spending, which was originally estimated at $ 3.5 trillion.
