Many killed in Saudi Arabia, in Yemen coalition, rebel attacks

Two were killed in the Saudi city of Jizan while three were killed in a coalition airstrike in Yemen’s Ajama.

Three people have been killed in an airstrike by a Riyadh-led coalition in Yemen, while two were killed in a projectile attack on Yemen’s Houthi rebels in Saudi Arabia.

Since 2014, Yemen has been pitted in a civil war pitting Iran-backed Houthi rebels against an internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led military coalition.

Saudi Arabia’s civil defense said on Saturday that two people, a Saudi and a Yemeni, were killed and seven others wounded in a projectile attack on Jazan, the kingdom’s southern region bordering Yemen.

“A military projectile fell on a commercial store on Main Street, resulting in the deaths of two people,” it said in a statement. Seven others were injured.

In Yemen, doctors said coalition airstrikes killed three people and wounded six others in the rebel-held city of Ajama, northwest of the capital Sanaa.

“Three civilians, including a child and a woman, were killed and six others were injured,” doctors told AFP news agency.

The deadly cross-border attack marks an escalation in Yemen’s long-running civil war.

Saudi media reported that a Saudi-led military coalition on Friday targeted Sanaa, a military camp near the city centre.

Houthi media said the attacks affected a populated neighbourhood, with homes damaged.

The Saudi-led coalition said on Saturday it was “preparing for a massive military operation”.

The coalition said it would hold a news conference later in the day to address the latest developments.

military growth

Yemen’s war broke out in 2014 when the Houthis captured Sanaa and much of the country’s north.

Months later, a US-backed Saudi-led coalition intervened to overthrow the Houthis and restore the internationally recognized government.

The war has turned into a stalemate and has given rise to the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

Throughout the conflict, the Houthis have launched cross-border drone strikes and missiles at airports, oil facilities and military installations within the kingdom.

Within Yemen, the Coalition bombing campaign has drawn international criticism for hitting non-military targets such as hospitals and wedding parties in the Arab world’s poorest nation.

Some 130,000 people, including thousands of civilians, have died in Yemen’s civil war.
