The Autonomous Service University Hospital in Maracaibo (Sahum) reported through a press release that as part of the celebration of its 63 years of foundation, today November 18, the day of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá, the public health center has a new director: Dr. Alejandro Borjas.
Borjas, a young and energetic professional of 46 years, resident of Internal Medicine and born in Maracaibo on February 7, 197,7 in the parish of Olegario Villalobos, expressed himselfas “more maracucho than tequeño.”
During this interview,w he expressed his great pride in being the General Director of Zulia’s health icon, known as the Health Giant of western Venezuela. It is recognized as a personal, educational,l and professional creation of the University Hospital of Maracaibo.
He began his training as a student at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zulia (LUZ) graduated as a General Physician in 2002 and entered the hospital as an intern doctor, after returning from his year in the rural areas of the state of Nueva Esparta, practicing at the Juan Griego Type II Hospital and the Macanao peninsula, where he reported adopting his love for surfing.
Then he returned to the University, with Dr. Máximo Quintero (now deputy director of Sahum) in December 2002 during the oil strike.; Later, he went to Caracas to pursue a postgraduate degree in Internal Medicine, at the Pérez Carreño Hospital of the IVSS of the UCV, but personal circumstances redirected his destination and he went to Buenos Aires to specialize in Clinical Pathology.
Upon his return he joined Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) where for 18 years he worked a: Coordinating Manager of the 5 de Julio Clinic,as Coordinator of the Oil Center, for 2 years; and last positionass the Medical Supervisor in the main building of 5 de Julio, in the Health Management of PDVSA.
I trained at Petróleos de Venezuela and for me, it is a school, especially in the sense of discipline because it is like the military, there I learned to follow a project and there I trained as a civilian soldier,” he stressed.
With the pandemi,c he returned home
On March 17, 2020, Borjas returned to Sahum – part of the appearance of the Covid-19 pandemic – asan assistant in the Emergency Department of the hospital, responsible for the Coordination of the Covid Emergency in 2021 every year; Following the revocation of the WHO pandemic emergency order, he assumed the role of Head of the Internal Medicine Service, until a year ago.
In terms of teaching, Borjas explained Withh the pandemic leaving, Dr. Máximo Quintero, Monitor of the Postgraduate Course in Internal Medicine, “My great friend invited me to join the classes of the Postgraduate Course in Internal Medicine. I especially consider the men as my children and I will go to LUZ for two years, training and finishing the class of new internists.”
He went on to make sure, that hewouldl not leave the Internal Medicine Service because of his newresponsibilities onn the contrary, “I will continue to do the review at 6:30 in the morning to be in charge of the hospital at 8 in the morning and answer my responsibilities as the director of the hospital.

Dr. Alejandro Borjas knows that the hospital has natural leader, and that it is a city within a city “The one who came to the Sahum Directorate is an Internal Medicine Resident,and because I was then and now, I will continue to review it with my sons, because I am an ‘old Resident’ who came to try to change or what we all know. change; I want to be the spokesperson for everyon, because I accompany them and know them all: the sanitation, maintenance, the woman who comes at 4 in the morning to clean the floor and we all know each other; That is why I thank the Single Health Authority of the State of Zulia for its vision of natural leadership, which made possible the generation of the necessary changes that allow us to provide decent and quality health to our population, ” he finished.
