A look at what’s happening in European football on Friday:
Spain
Sevilla could move to second place in the Spanish league when it threatens to relegate Cádiz. It enters the weekend tied on points with Barcelona but behind the Catalan club on a face-off tiebreaker. Barcelona will host Mallorca on Sunday. Second place is significant as it guarantees a place in the lucrative Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Real Madrid are 15 points ahead and need a draw from their last five matches to secure their second league title in three seasons. Cadiz has only one point outside the relegation zone.
Germany:
Union Berlin is sixth in the Bundesliga and stands firmly in the fight for European places. Urs Fischer’s players would like to extend their four-game winning run in league games as they have already hosted Grüther Firth. A win will keep Union spirits high before a crunch game against their main rivals Freiburg at the table next week. Firth was unlikely to survive in the top flight after starting his campaign with a record-low one point in 14 games. However, the teams last met in December when Firth beat Union 1–0.
France
Not much is at stake for Paris Saint-Germain in the last four league matches as the Qatari-backed team won a record 10th title last weekend. But for Strasbourg, PSG’s tour of the Alsace region is important. Strasbourg are currently ranked sixth in the league standings and are working hard to qualify for next season’s Europa League. PSG will be without several injured players including Leandro Paredes, Julian Drexler and Mauro Icardi.
