The supermarket has undergone an extensive revamp to adapt to the company’s new “efficient store” model, involving an investment of 7.7 million euros and the involvement of 56 suppliers, who employ more than 600 people during operations, as that has been reported by the report. Mercadona has 49 supermarkets in the Balearic Islands, 35 of which have implemented this model, including a delicatessen with sliced ​​and packaged ham, a central gondola in perfumery for specialty cosmetics, a fresh-squeezed orange juice service, a new oven section with specialty sushi, bread slicers or refrigerated pastries, among other novelties.
Similarly, Cane Picafort supermarkets have added a new ‘Ready to Eat’ section, which offers ready-to-eat dishes served in containers made from natural materials, such as sugar cane — a compostable material –, cardboard or paper. .
The company has also arranged a rest area with tables and chairs where the ‘boss’ – as Mercadona calls its customers – can eat freshly prepared dishes and have a cold drink to accompany it.
With regard to the environmental aspect, measures have been taken to reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent compared to the traditional store model, which means “optimization of materials and the thickness of walls and ceilings, as well as improvements in thermal and acoustic insulation” doing, as well as new freezer cabinets that are more energy efficient and respect the environment”.
Mercadona has indicated that the store features an automatic LED lighting system that is regulated by zones and time of day for more efficient energy management.
